Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

I previously assumed that spend would count for IC + Kimpton + Regent + participating SS.
the ones that are part of IHG definitely count towards RA.

i'm also leaning to 12K being the threshold spend, at least for new RA's..

I miss the drink like a fish minibar benefit. When I was an RA, I usually paid for a premium room or suite and hope the upgrade will blow my mind. The club benefit at IC Singapore was good but I didn't miss it at IC GS Hong Kong when I was denied.

This, exactly this. IC was the only chain where this worked - pay for the highest room you’d want to stay in, then wait for something impressive, and it rarely, if ever, disappointed - and the drink like a fish minibar was the icing on the cake (who needed the club anyway). These days, especially as occupancy climbs, you’ll see less and less of this. Though in fairness, my Dubai and Abu Dhabi stays did get an upgrade to a suite - on points - but it’s like a small ish suite. In contrast, Hyatt in Dubai stuffs me into a suite that I need a bicycle to get around on. So yeah … kind of feel like the glory days are far gone.

Is it certain that Mr & Mrs Smith booked through the IHG website does not count as qualifying RA spend? Given Amb/Royal Amb/Inner Circle now gets given additional benefits at Mr & Mrs Smith properties it suggests to me there is some intention for the two to overlap.

I'm somewhat considering a new home from Marriott and could probably fairly easily make RA if that spend counted, but I just don't like enough ICs/Kimptons otherwise.

To answer my own question per Term 14 of the Ambassador Terms and Conditions, it appears sadly not still - https://www.ihg.com/intercontinental...rms-conditions

14. Royal Ambassador is granted by invitation only at the sole discretion of IHG® One Rewards and IHG® One Rewards reserves the right to limit the number of Royal Ambassador members at any time. Royal Ambassador status is extended to a small percentage of InterContinental Ambassador members, based on their qualified activity at Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Regent Hotels & Resorts, and participating Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas.

Mr & Mrs Smith hotels are usually so much more expensive if you book via IHG (vs direct) that even if the spend counted I am not convinced it would have been in your best interest to book on IHG's platform.

Indeed.
The fact remains that I benefited from upgrades (beyond the points for accommodation fare) by booking through IHG (which I might not have had by booking directly), in addition to the generally pleasant GoldSmith welcome gift.

It is still unfortunate that fees outside of the room rate (catering, which generally exceed EUR 350-400 per day for two guests) cannot generate IHG One Rewards points.

Yes even in points. I was looking for a hotel on points in New Jersey, USA and there is a Mr & Mrs Smith on the beach for 100,000 points per night.

Definitely true sometimes but not always, I’m staying at one this weekend where pricing was the same as booking direct so it’s basically free IHG points! The bigger issue for me is IHG sometimes doesn’t have access to all the room inventory or room types.

Correct.

If a room is available on Mr and Mrs Smith but not on IHG.com, my advice is to contact IHG by phone and they will put you in touch with the Mr and Mrs Smith accommodation department and resolve the issue.

How would you interpret 17a

17. InterContinental Ambassador and Royal Ambassador guaranteed upgrade excludes Residences, Penthouses, Presidential and Speciality Suites and two bedroom or greater Suites/Villas.

a. Royal Ambassadors purchasing a suite category will receive a one category suite upgrade.

b. Further Suite exceptions at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts in addition to clause 17 can be reviewed here.

c. The upgrade exclusion is applied only towards the Ambassador Guaranteed benefit and does not limit IHG® One Rewards Elite benefits.

About 17A

As an example at IC AMS:
- book a Jr suite -> upgrades to Exec suite (suite cat +1)

As an example at IC Bali
- book Club Duplex Suite -/- nothing to upgrade into
(suite cat+1 are all specialty suites excluded by terms &conditions)
! So better to book a cat - 2 lower as in classic room
RA: gives Club
Cat+2 upgrade as RA : classicroom upgrades into duplex suite
=
makes a Club Duplex suite at the rate of a classic room
utilizing the full RA upgrade benefits
(how can you not love this!)

If at any case the RA upgrade path is exhausted some hotels will go the extra mile and still upgrade suite cat +1
Only works with longstanding frequent stay relationships as mentioned stimpy as in IC PLG
For example at IC PLG as i am recuring guest:
i booked prestige suite = 1 bedroom suite : no more RA upgrade because terms conditions exclude upgrade into Ambassador Suite
Yet they still upgraded us anyway to Ambassador suite
Due to the longstanding relationship

or in another case IC AMS as i am recuring guest:
i must have and book the executive suite anyway
so my RA (suite cat +1) upgrade path is exhausted
......
but I book also an extra classic room for my personal inviteés
thanks to the longstanding relationship
my RA upgrade (cat+2) shifts from my own room to the extra room
and is applied to the extra room to upgrade into Jr suite

I actually never had to experience a no upgrade scenario as RA as 1 way or the other at least somehow there was a room cat upgrade possible or provided by discretion of the hotel and by smartly booking the appropiate catagories below the max RA upgrade level

Only at Kimpton Fitzroy London as InnerCircle was an upgrade not possible because the only [cat+1] suite to upgrade into was already booked: instead a daily lavish bottle of Moét was offered so no complaints!

I could give lots of examples of being upgraded to specialty suites at the better IC's. Even on award nights. But IC's are not all the same. Some are cheap with the upgrades, some are not. You learn over time and I actually prefer it that way. I like that some managers at IC's have the freedom to upgrade above and beyond. It is better than forcing the same policy to all hotels.

Ah, good to know. I will no longer systematically assume that the price is poor - I will re-start doing a comparison before booking.

Royal Ambassador - is it still desirable?

I was a IHG Royal Ambassador For 10 years between 2007 and 2017, I experienced fantastic treatment and upgrades and some lovely hotels around the world, obtaining wonderful suite upgrades and mini bar indulgence.

Since 2017 I have switched all my business to Hyatt (Globalist) and Marriott Titanium.

i have already renewed my status for 2023 of these programs and was considering making a run for RA the rest of this year and early next year. I already have Ambassador.

i have some questions:

1. what are the current requirements to earn RA?
2. are we able to get. A fast track or use a referral cert?
3 is it still worth it?
