Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

I think compared with previous years in this thread about RA-qualifications,
The threshold is now higher because:
- instead of just IC ~ one can count also Kimpton / 6senses / Regent in the mix
- as expected those 3 brands are pitched higher in price
- travel has been rebounded in some parts of the world where it has been out of control: IHG must view which markets report high occupancy
- it is uncertain if EQP / EQN is pure on revenue or are awardnights(+incidentals) counted too similair as in Diamond calculations
- in the past F&B spend at hotels counted but difficult if venues were still closed due to covid impacted
- there were always 3 batches (actually 4) of RA qualification periods:
* at any time for VIPS - influencers - Bloggers (remembering TPG's smirk when he got one via the old referral system)
1 begin december - first week
2 medio december - second week
3 end of december - during Hanukkah / Christmas
4 january new year - those writing in to have IHG re-examine their tenure and spend

Thanks for sharing. As RA status has been auto-renewed for the previous years, I can't recall the mechanism. My last qualification was renewed on 2nd week of Dec in Y2019 if I am not mistaken. Hopefully I do get some positive news as my travel has only started in 2H of this year and typically I only travel to a few Asian cities which has been opened up for international travel without any need for quarantine.

There are many IC within China and China is fine. I am trapped in Hong Kong which is different and I doubt IHG cares for the few from Hong Kong. Hong Kong is small like Singapore and no where much to travel to if trapped inbound.

I feel like I am loyal as can be already. I try to have some incidental spendings and the local IC said their restaurant is fully booked by Klook discount packages or private event.

We had the latest announcement for relaxation of Covid restrictions and it is 5 days close contacts quarantine period. I was hoping for open borders and no masks.

Could be that IHG has a different scope for greater China + environs regions as they always have with promos/news that is that region specific.

for me RA comes to an end after 14 consecutive years. Fair enough, as travel didn't bring me to destinations where IC's or Kimptons were present. Had only 19 nights and 4000USD spent this year. On the other hand being not RA anymore I'm not sure if I'll continue staying at IC's in the future when I still have Bonvoy Titanium.

I can however say that I've immensely enjoyed my time as RA and consider this the best loyalty program. What is putting me a bit off trying to regain it, is the uncertainty of the invitation criteria.

I can however say that I've immensely enjoyed my time as RA and consider this the best loyalty program. What is putting me a bit off trying to regain it, is the uncertainty of the invitation criteria.
Same for me after almost 20 years of RA. Much less nights since my regular places either have no more IC (Hong Kong, Joburg), closed for renovation (Bangkok) or not accessable (several places in China).
Not sure what to do next year. RA was great, but I am hesitant to build up nights with the uncertanity of the criteria.
Any recommendation which status I should chase next? Looking mainly for 5star high end in Asia, Europe.= (both city and beach locations) at around 60-80 nights a year.

The grass on the other side can be greener,
if Marriott / Hilton / Hyatt
just have a US-centric creditcard and easy(ier) top status
if you got it, flaunt it and get those sign up bonus

it can however not be greener because:
- if earning status hardcore (non-US) you will feel diddled for all your hard working efforts as no distinction/value compared to everyone with a US-creditcard
- bloated & streched ranks of waves of elites at those chains make benefits a game of % chance
- the effect of lifetime status at those chains seems alluring but can quality & quantity cope ? Example. status/offerings/ambiance of their club lounges

you are absolutely right with the qualification criteria and the number of elites. However I think when you spend your time predominantly in Asia and Europe as Unterwegs indicated, the number of credit card elites might be lower

I have sent an email to IC AMB service centre to enquire if there is any round of review given that there are border restrictions in travelling for beginning of year as well as that I have another 1.5 week night stay upcoming in IC hotel in later part of Dec. This is the response that I have just received. Seems like Kimpton and Regent hotel stays are not taken into consideration for this time around. I have a couple of nights stay in Regent Taipei and Kimpton Bangkok as there are no IC hotels in these cities:

Good afternoon Mr. hclee01,

I hope your day is going well in Singapore! It's great to hear from one of our Diamond Elite Royal Ambassadors.

I have read your inquiry about extending your Royal Ambassador status. I understand how hard it may be to travel due to restrictions in your area.

All Ambassador members are reviewed for Royal invitation based on their stay behaviors exclusively at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts (excluding Residences). I was able to see your upcoming stay this December at our InterContinental XXXXX and other upcoming stays. We appreciate you choosing IHG for your stay and we will surely let the management know to have it taken into consideration.

I greatly appreciate your loyalty to us and I hope to see your name again on the potential invitational list for Royal Ambassador membership at the end of the year.

Thank you and I trust to InterContinental Hotels and Resorts will continue to be your preferred luxury hotel brand of choice.

Kind regards,
IC AMB

Thanks for sending a mail for clarification...

But with such a response:

I just don't know whether to laugh or cry ....

- t&c mentioned all combined IC+Kimpton+Regent+6senses
https://www.ihg.com/intercontinental...rms-conditions under 14
Royal Ambassador status is extended to a small percentage of InterContinental Ambassador members, based on their qualified activity at Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, Regent Hotels & Resorts, and participating Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas.

- yet here the AMB-CS notes IC only

just amazing.....

they should take into account the fact that some RA that had remained loyal even in the pandemic years and spent up $10.000 at their local IHG-hotels for staycation during national/regional/international lockdown - those that requalified on spend even though their RA status was extended as the trend was to extend everyone's status in a branches of FFP/Loyalty programmes.

It is of course a mistake by the Ambassador service (unless it anticipated changes in 2023).

As long as Unterwegs is avoiding Radisson Rewards, nerves won't be shattered...
Imagine waking up and all points are halved in value and remain worthless.......

Interesting....

I'm at 51 IC nights ant 140k qualifying points this year. Will be interesting to see if I get a renewal.

Oddly at the start of 2020 I didn't get my renewal until early Feb, 'coincidentally' after I escalated to the SG IC to point out that lack of RA would mean me and my team could no longer stay there on business trips which was ~400 nights in 2019.

Ultimately I only need the RA for lounge access. And annoyingly I didnt choose that at 40 nights in the IHG rewards this year, and I'm 3 nights short of 70! Considering using points for a 3 night stay at the end of Dec at my local IHG hotel, checking in, going home and popping back in to check out after 3 days! Is that mad?

Mad?
Fiendish?

Surely not... as FT'ers would describe this as resourceful cleverness.,

if it is only 3 nights, what are you waiting for!
don't put off today what you can do tomorrow....
not much days left this end December,
better to get those nights asap before the systemclock resets 31dec/1 jan
(as this is the first year of IHG-1rewards - we have no idea if there is a smooth transition of milestone rewards in the new year)

as long as you keep us updated on the statistics of your favorite club lounge in the next year, that drink + nibble should taste extra rewarding
