Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

Was the Royal challenge introduced to select members in November a trial to understand if, in fact, it changes behaviours, enabling those select members the opportunity be guaranteed their status?

Spire Ambassador is the highest published tier and Royal Ambassador the invitational tier of InterContinental, as is Diamond Medalian and 360 at Delta or BA Executive Club Premier.
I have been RA for easily 10+ years and as a non drinker I very seldom have any booze from the minibar, however I do have friends and 1 in 10 stay the mini bar gets a hit. ( but really in most hotel there is only 10 mini bottles and a 2 beers) So not sure how much of a savings the new rules will be. with FOOD being free for sure I can use the $50 a night.
Oh and come on deciding who get RA status should have been done at the latest Jan 1, probably 50% of my stays are 2 rooms. ( if my status is denied my next 25 booked stays will be cancelled.) Spire Elite status is a joke its truly worthless.

i think they are saying USD50, up to a maximum of USD200 per stay.

I am getting nervous I received the "Royal Ambassador Kit" line on my Account Activity on 21 December 2018. Since then I have heard nothing (including anything regarding Kimpton) and still reflect as a Spire Ambassador online.

I was on 116240 qualifying points at year end (98% at IC), as a stay I had in December (Sandton IC) didn't post automatically due to some or other bug. The hotel has subsequently fixed this and the 8300 qualifying points have now posted but only as of 7 Jan.

Should I be nervous?

This made me laugh. “No fault of their own” . What makes you think there aren’t many “exceptions” as you call them - that’s exactly how RA works.

Hello from Japan. (Sorry if my English is confusing)
I am now throwing my first post, thinking that my data might present some reference as it is close to the hurdle guessed by some mates here.

  • My IC-only Spend: 123XX USD (strictly calculated qualified spending ONLY but obscured the figure for anonymity)
  • My IC-only Stay Counts: Around 45 nights across 3 countries
  • My Status: If given first-time RA, but no activity, no e-mail communication as of now, just keeping on Spire...

What I am concerned about is the fact that EVEN IF I am a candidate for RA, in terms of the spend, when the year-end figure is taken into consideration, my spend was below 10k up until mid-December and towards around Christmas it increased to the described level.
So if NEW RAs were determined based on the spend by Dec. 21st when many reported the appearance of the “signal,” I might have missed the chance. (Is this a problem in “behavior”? Maybe…)
I am fully aware that now criteria seem more complicated than ever before, but I am just curious about whether or not there is anyone given a signal in the point activity of NEW (not RENEWAL) RA status grant AFTER Dec. 21?
If yes I would give up my hope of being qualified at the moment.

Thanks!

Should I be nervous?
don't worry, if you have "Royal Ambassador Kit" line on your Account Activity on 21 December 2018 you have it.

Maybe…)

there are solid data points here for USD12K Net IC spend (assuming accurately computed, and reported), as yours exceeds that, maybe you should consider reaching out, sending an email.

there are a number on here that have done so when at the margin, around the data point, and have received favorable responses..

First things first: Welcome to Flyertalk!

User LuxuryLoyalty pointed out that the reviews are done, so I am afraid that you didn't succeeded in achieving first time RA. However I am happy to be proven wrong and sincerely hope that they are still reviewing accounts. Consider the fellow FT Roey above your post with 25k net spend. It is a shame by IHG to handle such customers like they do.

in fairness to IHG, we really don't know who LuxuryLoyalty is, whether a she. or a he, from Perth, Australia, or a Brandon Elliot from IHG, or Eltham for that matter....... from NZ, known to many posters, particularly from the UK!

i'd back it in if someone's spend is bonafide USD25K Net IC, that they will be made RA.

well done....

the $13k is without taxes, I already qualified for RA in 2017 and 2018.
last year I had quite some adjustments and still didn't receive a renewal mail.
I did send a mail out but no reply yet

Let's keep calm, and give IHG some more time until the end of the month, when status would elapse. Even in this thread they "officially" (?) communicated that the process is ongoing. Give them some confidence. IC still has 2 weeks to make things right, and get everything on track.

On the other hand, I do hope that there is some understanding that from a customer perspective the current approach is nerve wracking (and leads to postponing reservations for 2019). For guests with an annual spend of 10k or above, RA status is crucial in the decision process of staying at a IC or not. Without the RA benefits, you are guaranteed much better treatment at other chains when you allocate all your spend. Failing to see this would be completely out of touch with reality.

Nevertheless, I perceive it as a positive signal if someone from corporate would follow this thread. This would mean that they take efforts to get to know the commotion among their best customers, which is something they can learn from and use as a point of improvement for the process in the coming years. It is in fact a sign of valuing your customers.

You also need to factor in that given the relatively poor footprint of IC's most of us who spend a significant amount on travel end up with top/high status with other chains, which make it a total no-brainer to switch stays away from IC and wider IHG without RA. There is no way that I am going to be staying at IC's with no real benefit when I could get very real benefits at Hilton or Marriott.

I've been maintained Marriott Platinum Premier Ambassador and IC RA both. I've been loving IC RA because most benefits are guaranteed so I don't have to worry about upgrade until the moment of check-in like Marriott. But if I'm downgraded to AMB, I will move all my IC spend to Hyatt for Globalist status. I will have 4 Suite Upgrade Awards, regular suite upgrade upon avail plus can achieve the lifetime status.

But I still love ICs and hope to maintain my stays with them because there are so many relationship I've made with people at ICs.
