Issue with Fare Repricing When Changing Flights

I have a situation with a flight change and would appreciate any insights. Here's the background:
  • I’ve already flown the first segment of my Ireland-Canada trip and have 1 remaining segment back to Ireland
  • Operating airline EI (not booked as a codeshare); ticketed by AS
  • I want to change it to a later date.
  • Before calling the airline, I checked ExpertFlyer and confirmed that the flight/date I want is available in the fare class I originally booked.
  • The fare rules show:
    • CHANGES
      ANY TIME
      CHANGES PERMITTED FOR REISSUE/REVALIDATION.
NOTE - TEXT BELOW NOT VALIDATED FOR AUTOPRICING.
CHANGES PERMITTED . ANY FARE DIFFERENCE MUST BE
PAID IF CHANGING TO A DIFFERENT FARE CLASS .
      ----
CHANGES PERMITTED FROM SAME COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
      ONLY.
      ----
When I called the airline that issued the ticket, the agent said there would be a $450 fare difference. I asked if they were rebooking me in to my original booking class. The answer was no because their system reprices it automatically and chooses the booking class.

I then contacted the operating airline directly, and they confirmed that the flight I want is definitely open in my original booking class and that no fare difference or change fee should apply...but they're not authorized to make the change for me.

My questions:
  1. Why would the system automatically reprice my ticket into a higher fare class when the flight is available in my original fare class?
  2. Is there any way to override the system or get the change processed at the original fare?
  3. How should I approach this for a resolution? I already dealt with a supervisor who said that she can't just enter a fare class manually. Is that correct?
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

For the clearest response, please post the airline so you get the best advice!

Is the fare available for the issuing carrier as well? Or only for the operating carrier?

It's an EI fare booked/ticketed by AS
The fare is not available with an AS fare basis. Is that what you mean?

1) Most airlines has this practice. Just because you are able to book a new ticket in a certain booking class, doesn't mean that you will be able to rebook in the same booking class. Nothing new I'm afraid.
2) Not to my knowledge. Wait for a schedule change and rebook free of charge (invol. rebooking) or ask to cancel/get a full refund, i.e. you book a new ticket for the new travel dates?
3. I doubt you will be able to do anything about it.

Perhaps you could ask AS for a somewhat transparent explanation of the underlying mechanics involved in the fare you purchased, as they pertain to the written terms and conditions. This might help you better evaluate other flight options. I'm also a fan of waiting/hoping for schedule changes to potentially use as get out of jail free cards in situations like that.

Was booking with Alaska substantially cheaper than other channels?
