Vacation decision

I haven't been on a vacation in a long time (since before covid). I have been separated since and I am craving and have time for a solo trip this July.

I have 12 or 13 days to disappear. I am trying to decide between an all-inclusive adult-only beach resort or a cruise. I have done the former a handful of times before but never been on a cruise. I have been to Mexico, Cuba, and Turks & Caicos.

I am looking for a relaxing trip but I am going solo and would love to meet people - especially single women! In my mid-50s but look and act much younger.

Any suggestions for me? I have never done an all-inclusive in July, either. This is the only time for me to get away...

I would prefer to spend less than 3k, but if necessary, willing to splurge some more...

No vacation since 2021? That’ not healthy dude, neither physically nor mentally. I do appreciate some Americans have neither the vacation available nor the inclination to avail themselves of what they do have, but nothing since 2021? Wow.

Not to be smug or anything, but I have never left any unused vacation time on the table as the rule is “use it or lose it” where I’m at. So I’ll take all 6 weeks every single year, no exception. Usually divided up into 2 times a week, one time 3 weeks and the rest used to bridge public holidays and weekends. All in all it’s something like 45 days away from the office a year, which is just about acceptable.

From my perspective a cruise is right down there on the list along with a week in the New York sewer system, with anything “all-inclusive” being just a nudge or two above that.

If you can afford it, I’d recommend a Greek island. Any island really, except the influencer nightmare that is Santorini. Kastellorizo is a good bet, and if you just want peace and quiet you can’t go wrong with Symi. If you want to have a bit more of a lively scene, Kos or Crete are good options.

I’m off on my second vacation of the year in a little less than a month. A relaxing week in Chania on Greece, enjoying an amazing array of excellent restaurants, fantastic beaches, great weather and that unique Greek atmosphere I truly love. All from the base of a small, and exceedingly cool, hotel run by an amazing husband/wife/son/daughter team. A hotel which fulfils another major requirement of mine: Not being affiliated with any chain.

You probably want a cruise since you want to meet women. Lots of adult resorts are couples. I am a solo traveler, but have zero interest in meeting someone. I am not a fan of cruising myself, but I recall looking at cruises to one region a couple years back for some reason, and trying to find ones without single supplements. I saw all these singles' cruises, and all these "opportunities." Not my cuppa, but I'd look into it since it may be exactly what you want.

I'd look for a (women's) retreat (e.g. yoga) in a place like costa rica or similar. Though July is rainy season it will still be busy and warm with sufficient sunshine. Otherwise a group tour - not as relaxing but might fit the bill.

OP's location is BC, and their only program is listed is Aeroplan, so I'd say they're Canadian. I'd also wager a guess that they live in/near Vancouver, one of the most expensive cities in the world.

+1 for cruises, unless you're incredibly outgoing and you have zero issues cold approaching left and right.

We need more information. The only things you have said you want to do are relax and meet women. If so, you can just relax in your home and use dating apps.

Seriously, I'd start by asking yourself what you'd like to DO, Is there a part of the world that interests you? Is there an activity you enjoy?

I realize some people just want to go someplace sunny and warm where they are indulged, and if so, then go for it. But it's not clear what you want.

I called Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) today and spoke with a sales rep. She told me that there is no such thing as a 'singles cruise'. She suggested that I contact a company called Sixthman that apparently does some hosting of events on NCL cruises or something of that nature. She was quite adamant about there being no 'singles cruises' although she went on to say that some ships have more 'single' staterooms (for one person only) that others. Thus, you could probably expect that there are more solo travellers on those ships.

I am still trying to find a cruise that would be fun as a newly single guy and would also work within my time frame in July. Can anyone suggest anything??? Primarily the ones I've seen that might work from a time-frame perspective are Caribbean cruises from Florida (mainly Miami) or Alaskan cruises from Seattle or Vancouver. There are other options but those look to be good ones. That said, not sure if they will be full of families with kids and couples...

Smile

And I was thinking you were female. I suggest checking the cruise forum on FT.

I think it's great that you are going to travel. You need to treat yourself.

They have some awesome groups and travel tours specifically for single women over 50 (as well as ones for men and all other age groups). Many of them are for adventurous and young spirited women. I've heard of women going solo and making lifelong friendships.

I would definitely check out this woman's blog about solo travel Girl About the Globe. It is an excellent resource. They have a detailed page with all of the reputable tour companies for single women over 50.

It won't let me post the link because I'm new. But you can just type Girl About the Globe Solo Travel over 50 into Google and it will take you right to that page.

That blog also has a Facebook group. Fb groups in general would be a great place to get more info. If you are on Fb.. I'm sure there are a bunch. I'd search Facebook Groups for phrases like Solo Travel, Single Women Travels, Traveling Over 50, etc.

Happy and Safe Travels!
