Just inspect your baggage claim checks at SMF to make sure that JNB appears as the final destination on the checks.

Are all flights on a single ticket? If so, the UA agent at SMF should be able to through-check your bags all the way to JNB. You should not see them again until you get to baggage claim at JNB.

Even if they are separate tickets, Star Alliance policy is to check through bags. May take some more time for separate tickets though.
