I booked tickets with United, Sacramento to Johannesburg. The last leg is a Lufthansa flight, Frankfurt to Johannesburg, I'm wondering if we will have to claim our bags and then check back in with Lufthansa?

​​​​​Are all flights on a single ticket? If so, the UA agent at SMF should be able to through-check your bags all the way to JNB. You should not see them again until you get to baggage claim at JNB.

Just inspect your baggage claim checks at SMF to make sure that JNB appears as the final destination on the checks.

Even if they are separate tickets, Star Alliance policy is to check through bags. May take some more time for separate tickets though.
