How much layover time to allow?

I am researching flights on United out of George Bush in Houston to Argentina. Arrival into IAH (from a local airport) gives about an hour layover before leg to Panama City PTY. We will have to change terminals in IAH (international terminal). Will there also be security here? Is there any type of immigration or addition screening when you leave the US? For infrequent international travelers, I worry an hour isnt enough. Other option allows 3 hours. Thanks!

Both xxx-IAH & IAH-EZE on 1 ticket? Or 2 separate tickets?
If 1 ticket its more of a problem for the airline.
What airline/airlines? Both UA?
Will you have checked baggage?
USA does not have exit immigration procedures
UA at IAH will check you have the require documentation for entry to Argentina. With Covid-19 that may take more time than a year ago.

Airport PTY is not in Argentina. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tocume...tional_Airport

Personally would take 3 hours, even if all on 1 ticket. 60 minutes does not allow any margin for delays. If 2 separate tickets would never consider 60 minutes.

Have asked moderators to move this thread to the UA sub forum.

So long as you are traveling on one ticket, 60 minutes is the minimum time which UA permits for a connection from domestic to international at IAH. Your bags will be checked through, there will be no additional security, and the US does not have any exit formalities. In addition, if your inbound flight to IAH is late and you miss your outbound, UA will rebook you. Nonetheless, if this is stressful in any way and you are not in a hurry, why not book the 3-hour connection. It will take you 15 minutes to offload from your first flight and UA will start boarding your second flight 45 minutes before scheduled departure. That leaves only 2 hours to kill and gives you plenty of time for a sandwich and coffee.

If you travel on separate tickets, then it is up to you. You take all the risk and I do not advise it. If you must do separate tickets, definitely allow the three hours.

Thanks!

thank you for the reference to the UA thread regarding navigating IAH.

actually, United flight was BTR-IAH-PTY-COR. Destination is Cordoba. One ticket.

It was suggested to go through EZE instead. Spend the night then travel on to COR since arrival time needs to be morning 8-10 am).

If you must be rebooked due to a missed, you should assume that you will be delayed for at least 24 hours and possibly several days if UA doesn't fly into your destination on a daily basis due to COVID-19 schedules. Unless you're going home or plan to stay with family (and relatively close to the airport if they're planning to meet you), I'd definitely take the three hour connection. With separate tickets, I'm not sure three hours is enough tome for comfort.
