Mileage Transfer

My husband and I are planning a trip for our 10th Ann in June. Our miles are a bit spread, though all within *A and UR. Here's the breakdown:
UR: 83,813
United: 1250 each
SAS: We each have 7500 as do our 3 children from a trip last year

I know we have to transfer at least some of the kids points into our accounts to be able to have enough to get 2 E class for our upcoming trip.
Questions:
1. Is it better to have all the needed points go to one person in order to book both tix together or book them individually from our respective accounts?
2. We're not particular on where we go, we have some ideas but nothing nailed down yet. Dates are more important so I figure we'll go wherever we find good reward flights. Thinking we'll utilize United (flying out of MCI) but I suppose we could just as easily fly any other *A partner too? Is there a more ideal airline or something else I'm missing?

Welcome to FT!

To answer your questions...

1. It doesn't really matter, but since you're transferring, it's usually easier to have all the miles in one account so you don't have lots of orphan miles spread across several accounts. It's also easier to book two tickets from one account rather than book one, then another, hoping availability is still there.

2. I suggest you look at the UA rewards chart. You have 85,000 miles once you transfer your UR points, meaning you can get two return tickets of 42,500 each. This gets you two return tickets to anywhere in the continental US, Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America at the Saver level. To get to Hawaii you'll need 5,000 more miles, which shouldn't be to difficult. Saver rewards are a bit harder to come by so you need to be flexible with dates and/or check regularly. Your SAS miles won't do you any good. You have too few and can't pool them anyway, and you certainly can't transfer them to UA.

Thank you for setting me straight with the SAS miles! We acquired them last Spring when we took advantage of their kids fly free sale. I hadn't really thought about how they'd fit into an overall miles plan. Working on becoming more savvy We do plan on going back to that region so perhaps we could transfer those into one account and use for a domestic with them.

SAS is a member of Star Alliance, as is UA. If an eligible fare class you could have got UA ff miles for those flights.

Having multiple ffp’s with low balances is never a good idea. You may never get enough ff miles/points to be of use before they expire. Adding frequent miles in a ff program that you can use are worth more than ff miles in an orphan ffp that you will never use, even in the earning rate is better.

Just to be clear...you can't transfer miles between *A accounts at all (there are some complicated roundabout ways, but these devalue the miles greatly.) So your SAS miles are never going to help you with your UA account. You also can't transfer miles from different family members into a single account (there are some household account exceptions, though these don't apply here.) Bottom line: your SAS miles are pretty worthless as they are (maybe you can buy something with them?) In future, you should concentrate your *A earning in one programme only.

Yes, lesson learned. Wishing I had done a little more research before that trip to utilize points better moving forward, but here we are.

SAS is one of the few ffp's that allow transfers to other SAS EuroBonus members.
But the associated cost makes it worthless.

SAS EuroBonus expiration
2.7 Members can use their points and take advantage of offers/benefits as soon as they have sufficient valid points in their EuroBonus account, provided that at least one (1) point-qualifying activity is performed in addition to welcome/introduction bonuses. Points are valid for an additional four years after the qualification period during which they were earned. After this deadline, the points become null and void.
