When ever I visit a new airport, I like to Google search for it and see if they have a map on their website. Usually they have a PDF file you can download to your mobile device. I can then mentally walk throughout the terminal several times before the trip.
I admit I am a little geeky when it comes to travel, and enjoy studying airport maps and train/subway maps of my destination. I can then figure out where to go when glancing at the maps in the terminal. I found it to be valuable when my kids were little, and the knowledge of restroom locations was very important.
Don't be afraid to ask for help if you are lost, I find most people are patient when they realize you are traveling for the first time.

The Heathrow map is simple enough to understand, but the Keflavik one is confusing as they don't have a guide for what the icons mean.
In Yoshi212's initial reply, it was stated '-At KEF you'll go through passport control before proceeding to your next flight' so, based on their airport map,am I to understand 'border control' on the bottom map is the passport control? The reason I ask is because, on the 'transfer' tab, it states 'If a passenger leaves the customs area (from the Arrival area) in Keflavik, the passenger will not be able to return to continue his trip' so this has me a bit worried.
I think the customs area is on the 2nd map page, so am I correct in understanding I go through border control and then stay in this general area (if my connection is at one of those C Gates at the bottom)? It's a pretty poor map, I think,

I'm not familiar with KEF, but typically most airport will have signage regarding connecting flights and just follow the line. You can always ask and Iceland Air employee as well, as this is Iceland Air hub, where most of their connections are made. How long is your layover at KEF?
