Which program/miles to save?

Hi Everyone,

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong area for this question. My girlfriend and I are flying from BKK:LAX via ICN later this year. She is flying Asiana Business and I am in Korean First (all flight departures and arrivals are within 1 hour of each other). At the time of booking our trip I obviously wanted us to travel together but didnt have enough miles in either program for each of us so I had to improvise. Now, it seems like I have enough United miles to switch myself onto the Asiana flight, but of course I will now have those extra Korean Air miles. So, a couple questions before I make any decision to switch:

Considering I only use points for international travel, would I be better off keeping my reservations as is, or should I spend 80,000 United miles if it frees up 90,000 Korean Air Miles (If it makes a difference I was thinking Africa or South America as my next destination)
Are there cancellation penalties or point forfeitures when cancelling a Korean Award ticket?
Thank you all in advance!

I personally find KE a difficult program to pool in so you may not want to be stuck with miles there, unless you are willing to go all in. The inability to book one way partner flight makes it quite difficult as you can't mix different alliances out and back.

That said, it's my holding account for SkyTeam, but I travel a lot through Korea and can make a lot of use of them. But you may struggle to book DL to South America for example as you may not be able to find flights both ways.
