Which program/miles to save?

Hi Everyone,

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong area for this question. My girlfriend and I are flying from BKK:LAX via ICN later this year. She is flying Asiana Business and I am in Korean First (all flight departures and arrivals are within 1 hour of each other). At the time of booking our trip I obviously wanted us to travel together but didn’t have enough miles in either program for each of us so I had to improvise. Now, it seems like I have enough United miles to switch myself onto the Asiana flight, but of course I will now have those extra Korean Air miles. So, a couple questions before I make any decision to switch:

· Considering I only use points for international travel, would I be better off keeping my reservations as is, or should I spend 80,000 United miles if it frees up 90,000 Korean Air Miles (If it makes a difference I was thinking Africa or South America as my next destination)
· Are there cancellation penalties or point forfeitures when cancelling a Korean Award ticket?
Thank you all in advance!
