Smile New guy

Hi everyone. I'm from Australia and very knew to this. I was wondering if this place is the best for an Australian looking for good travel advice/deals. After reading some threads it seems its very much suited for those living in America. I am happy to learn and spend time researching if this is the best place. Any feed back would be much appreciated.

Welcome to FT!

FT is mostly American, but nowhere close to 100 percent. There's an active Oceania forum here. It tends to be mostly about Australia, with the rest split between NZ and everywhere else in the area. Lots of Aussies there. There's also a regular FlyerTalker gathering in Australia* in late May, going into its 12th year soon, with a full weekend of festivities and attendance that is typically in the 30-50 range. It will be on the Gold Coast this year. More information in this thread in the CommunityBuzz section of FT.

A couple of years back I had a delightful dinner with some Australian Frequent Flyer (www.austrialianfrequentflyer.com.au) folks in Melbourne. They seem to be a friendly bunch - even by Australian standards, which are friendlier than most other places would be. I'd try that, too.

Welcome to FT, Johnno27!

It's a very global group here, pretty much by definition of what we seem to enjoy doing, which is travelling. Have a poke around and see what interests you; it's the best way to earn. For example, if you're from Australia but are wondering about places to stay in Tasmania or Bali, there are locals and frequent visitors who can give you good advice.

What this site is not for, and where people get very shirty pretty quickly, is finding you a travel deal, either for cash or miles. FT is not a travel agency, nor a reward booking service, so when people come along and post 'I need to fly from Omaha to Florence in July this year, please tell me how to get four business class seats for under $900' we usually reply with 'call a travel agent!'

But do stick around!

Thanks for those helpful tips I appreciate it. I will enjoy exploring the forum. Hopefully by spending about an hour a day I will familiarise myself with different terms.

Welcome, Johno!

Check out the Australia forum, and peruse the mileage run deals forum for good deals others have found - reasonably often good deals originating in Oz.

Thanks Doc Savage. I am also keen to find deals myself as its unfair to rely on other people doing the work. Any tips on where to start? Is it best to just read through online forums or go to google flights/skyscanner type websites and just enter random dates for travel and maybe stumble across the deals?

Look at the forums here in my link. Check this website for other deals, though these are most often from North America.

I use kayak.com/explore to see good deals from my home airport.

If you see a great deal, you often have to grab it quickly, which can be hard if you don't have a lot of work flexibility.

Good Luck and Safe Travels,

Doc

In addition to the destination fora, there are airline fora devoted to QF and VA.
