Advice Requested: EU Flight Delay Compensation

Earlier this year I had a delayed arrival time of roughly 3 hours 40 minutes from my AA trip from Heathrow to O'Hare. I went through an automated flight delay compensation website to help claim a refund as per EU regulations and I finally received a positive response from AA this morning.

Per their e-mail:

We offer you one of the following forms of compensation.

A. Monetary payment of 300EUR - or -

B. Transportation voucher in the amount of $500USD which may be used to purchase travel on American Airlines for you, a friend, or relative.
Whilst I am happy that this is a great result, I am getting conflicting information about the amount of compensation I am legally entitled to depending on the source I read. For instance:
    • When I read MoneySavingsExpert, they state that flights between an EU and non-EU airport delayed between 3-4 hours of expected arrival can claim 300, whilst anything 4+ hours would be entitled to 600 (plus any resultant costs).

Obviously the difference between the two values is rather large so I wanted to check with knowledgeable experts before I accept anything!

There's a long thread in the BA forum about this that will likely answer your question definitively or get an answer from one of the Brits.

I think the €300 is correct for the amount of delay you had. Your decision whether the cash or voucher is better for you.

See post #3 question #2 in the thread above.
