Lufthansa v. Air Canada

Next month I'll be flying Seattle to Frankfurt in coach. I'm new to both airlines. My two biggest concerns are comfort and earning miles.

Who has wider seats/more leg room?

Will I earn full miles for the round trip? I have miles with Alaska, UA, AA.

Thank you much.

The legroom and seat width depend on which aircraft you get on. You can check the route by looking at the airline's website for the plane configuration and/or use seatguru to find the better/best seats for you.

As for the earning that too depends on what you book. The fare class will determine what you earn on the programs. LH & AC only earn on UA of the 3 programs you listed so you'd want to check UA's site for what the fares will earn under the Mileage Plus program for the fares you purchase on AC or LH.

Check your booking class and look it up your credited mileage on wheretocredit.com

Lufthansa has been constantly hassled for the last several years by wildcat strikes that have been very disruptive. All other things being equal, I would not fly Lufthansa until all these labor issues have been settled.

Thank you for the insight. I will check the plane when I book but it does seem that I'm leaning toward Air Canada.

The words 'constantly' and 'wildcat' are not accurate in describing the LH labour relations situation. There have been a few strikes, and they have been well advertised in advance. For travel next month, as the OP states, it is not a consideration.

On LH eco flights in reasonable price usually you will not get any miles on most of the *A FFP. AC is better choice.

You don't know what you are talking about. OP collects with UA, which clearly spells out earning here:

I don't agree - in some cases, the strikes have been announced less than a week before they happened. I had a colleague caught up in this just this past November. In his case it wasn't announced until the day before the flight that his flight would be cancelled and LH would not allow him to rebook until the flight was actually cancelled. The union didn't announce which fights would be affected until the day before they were scheduled to operate. It was a huge hassle.

my colleague's flight was from IAH to FRA. Is that long-haul enough?

Why do people post when they are not well-informed?

The fact that there was going to be widespread industrial action was well-known and publicised in advance in the November cases. I had a few LH flights and rebooked to BA about a week before. Frankfurt airport was very quiet that day and most people just stayed away.

The cheapest fares K & L:

LH K - no miles on all FFP except M&M
LH L - no miles or 25% on most FFP, but for UA is 50%

AC K and L - 50 % miles on most FFP

All I can tell you is that he had a flight on a Saturday from IAH to FRA. The flight was not cancelled until Friday and they would not let him rebook without a charge until the flight was cancelled. Perhaps you paid for the new flight.

No, I called LH, cancelled my ticket, got a refund, and booked on BA. I didn't know whether my particular flight was going to operate or not, but I didn't want to find out the hard way.
