TSA Approved ID?

Hi All!

Have a question about TSA approved Identification. Since the the state that My Drivers License is issued in is no longer compliant with the federal ID requirements... I will no longer be able to use my Drivers License at the Airport. Will my Global Entry Card work?? Or will I have to drag my passport with me when I fly domestically?

Thanks!

No change has yet been announced so you can still use your license at the checkpoint. It's possible there will be no changes. Everything is up in the air.

See Drivers Licenses from Some States May Not Be Valid at Airports in 2016
The Department of Homeland Security said it would soon determine whether to enforce a law that requires all U.S. states to comply with federal standards when issuing drivers licenses. The result would be that holders of drivers licenses issued by multiple states would be unable to use their licenses as a form of identification at airport checkpoints across the nation.

Thanks! I was worried as the local news has been reporting that starting Jan 10 the license will not be valid at airports anymore. Guess I will wait and see and be prepared for either event.

Might be worth getting a passport card so you don't have to hassle with the full passport.

I've only been using my GE card at TDC checkpoints since I got it in 2011, with ... "interesting" results- in what will surprise no-one, about half the TSA TDCs had no idea what it was, so if I had the time to kill I'd wait for them to bring a supervisor out to verify the ID, educating the rest of the staff in the process. Around mid-2012 or so they must have released the memo (... to everyone?) and I stopped getting funny looks.

In OAK they actually called the real cops on me ... crazy

I just wonder what folks without passports or other federal ID are going to do? Just looked into getting a Passport card... another 30 dollars.

The large number of people without passports or other acceptable ID beyond a DL is one reason a lot of people don't believe that this will come to fruition.

I can see this being a HUGE problem in Missouri where My parents live. I know many people who fly regularly who do not have a passport as they don't leave the country.

I agree; carrying a full passport is a big hassle. A full passport, especially one with extra pages and lots of stamps, is too heavy for many normally-able people to lift, and won't fit into the carry-on bag or pack that most people bring onto airplanes.

New York IDs are on that list so I've wondered about this as well. According to the TSA website, you can use your Global Entry card. Nice. Next time I fly, I'm going to try it.

I know the new rules aren't in place yet but might as well give it a shot (bring your DL as backup!). I suspect it's not as well known so might encounter some resistance.

You can fly domestic without ID but it would cause massive delays at the airport since its a much longer screening process. Multiply that with the number of people who would need to be screened this way.

You'll be 100% fine using your Global Entry card to clear security in the U.S. Ever since I got my Global Entry card some 3 years ago, I have always used it to clear security in the U.S. and have never had any issues-and that includes clearing security for international flights as a passport is not required to clear security for an international flight departing the U.S. (only an approved Gov't issued I/D is required).

Well, mine's pretty thick now after a couple of packs of added pages. I wouldn't want to drag it through smurfland on every flight. Another card in the wallet would be a lot less hassle and a lot less prone to loss.

It's not so much that carrying a passport is a pain because of the space it takes up... Its the wear and tear that occur to it (I've hear of people being denied boarding or entry due to a worn Passport) plus there's an increased risk of it being lost/stolen as a US passport is worth $$$ on the black market. And yes, its one more thing to have to deal with. And FYI... If you forget it you can (as others have mentioned) go through alternative screening if you have no ID... It's just a HUGE pain and takes forever (ask me how I know........).....

We used our Global Entry cards for TSA at SFO with no problems today.
