Recent experience on timing:

I just did GE application and it took me 9 days before I could schedule my interview. SO did her application and it was 3 days (!) until she was approved. Two days later she was at her interview.

Don't forget to check if you have a credit card that will reimburse you for GE. As an example, if you are thinking about something like Amex plat you will get $100 back, $200 airline credit before Dec 31 and another $200 after. Add in club access and all the other extras... Might be worth it for you.

Just cleared GE for our upcoming trip to Australia and New Zealand. Curious if it helps us on arrival at either country, or at security checkpoints when boarding AC there.

We're flying UA to SYD, Jetstar from SYD to ZQN (Queenstown), then ANZ domestically and back to the US.

Thank you.

What about post #3 above?

"GE members get to use Australia smart gates in SYD/MEL/AKL too."

Yes your passport if it has a chip can be used at the smart gates. Study the video on how to use it before attempting or be heckled by the locals. Also at AKL and CHC in New Zealand.

As far as security there is no bonus.

We received and activated our Global Entry cards this week. If our GE approval is linked to our passports, I'm a bit confused when we should carry these cards.

You use them if you are crossing a land or sea border into the US: http://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-tr...bal-entry/card

Remember to provide your Known Traveller Number to any airlines that you use in order to get Pre-Check.

Instead of your passports, or in addition to?

For instance, if my airline boarding pass didn't show PreCheck, the ID might get me in?

Unfortunately not as Pre-Check is granted via the airline but, in theory, only if you have a KTN.

So I'm still not clear where the card comes into play. If I'm traveling internationally, I'll always have my passport.

The card has limited official use. I use it as my day to day ID and for going through TSA checkpoints because it does not have my address on it. When someone at a bar asks what it is I just say it's a Federal ID. GE cards at land and water crossings work.

It's easier to use a passport card as government issued photo iD as many people, including TSA document checkers, don't recognize GE cards.

I too never show my ID when I'm not driving because it contains my address.
