I am planning a trip (alone) to Mumbai India around Feb.2007 and am looking for any tips that could possibly help me. I will be in India for approx. 15 days and am planning a stay at the Hilton Towers in Mumbai. Has anyone ever stayed there before? I will fly out of Newark have a layover in London and then proceed to Mumbai. I am looking for any tips on things that I may encounter such as problems/requirements to enter India and then anything anyone has to say about their stay in India. Please, any response will be greatly appreciated as I have never been outside of the United States before. I would even appreciate negative reports of India so I will at least know what to expect!
Thank You!!! :

It has been almost 2 years since my last trip but here are some things to be aware of:
1) Visit your doctor or local clinic for shots and meds before you leave if you have not done so already.
2) You will have to reboard the plane in London even if you have a direct flight.
3) Be prepared for Delhi Belly when you arrive. Local doctor and prescriptions should be very inexpensive.
4) IME the personal space awareness if very different then in the US.
5) I recommend a visit to a small island which is a short boat ride from Mumbai. Don't remember the name but the boat leaves from the "Gateway to India" There was also an area in one of the parks where the monks had their living quarters carved out of solid granite.

If you're on business, that's a different story. I hope your work will be in the southern part of the city, near the Hilton Towers, because Mumbai is an enormous city with stunning amounts of traffic. If you are working uptown--anywhere north of Worli--you should stay at a hotel close to your office.
I can give more details once I know more about what you're planning to do in Mumbai. I have been traveling there regularly since 1998.

The Island near Mumbai is called Elephanta and is famous for its Budhdists Caves. If you have time, its worthwhile to take to atrip to Aurangabad (5-6 hours drive) away and see Ajanata and Ellora caves too. These are World Heritage sites and worth seening. Ellora caves boast of the world's biggest Monolith......whole temple carved out of one single pice of large rock.
You can see Konkan beaches really beautiful and different from anyother beaches you have ever seen. Go to Goa. And if you are planning to travel around India in those 15 days, then let me know and I will give you more tips.
