The forex counters in arrivals (Thomas Cook and Centrum) will exchange your 50$ into INR without issues: http://www.csia.in/atcsia/forex.aspx

Note that for such a little amount there will be a fee. And the exchange rate will be poor on top (Thomas Cook buys US$ at 60 although the rate is 63 for example).

I travelled via Mumbai last week.

Official Bank rate was 64 = US$1

After fees the effective rate for US$100 note was 55!

I ended up changing money at my hotel and got about 58. Not much better.
