If you had decided to fly in the past week or so (students flying out for college), and onwards for a few more, you will definitely get an op-up (in Y) with status, ex-BOM.

I am witnessing and hearing about more op-ups on long-haul trips to/from India this summer than I have ever seen or heard about before on US airlines, European airlines and Middle Eastern airlines (at least for the long-haul segment). It seems to be the airlines' game is to substantially oversell economy class at cheaper prices than was usual these past few years while keeping in mind that there are more business class seats going empty that can be used to take on those economy class passengers to maximize revenue and offset at least some of the revenue decline stemming from much lower premium cabin demand. This situation makes it a rather better than usual year to have elite status on the airline and/or airline alliance for those who value op-up odds greatly and where status is the driving factor behind op-up priority.
