Baggage Allowance Queries

Hi,

I am travelling with family from Mumbai to Nagpur via Jet Airways. My tour agent tells me that I cannot carry a single 20 kg bag between two people on a Jet flight, even though I am technically not utilizing the full limit of 30 kg. He says I will need to split the weight between two bags, each weighing less than 15 kg. I do not think this makes sense. Can someone please clarify? Thanks.

Yes he's correct. It's 1 bag per passenger max 15 kgs. The max limit is applicable for both Y & J passengers. So if you try and take a 20 kg bag... you will be at the mercy of the check-in staff to allow you through. By the rules they can make you pay for the 5 extra kgs! These rules will be very clearly stated in your ticket and on the 9W website.

With the current state of 9W.... I would not take that chance... they'll be looking to make money every opportunity they can right now!

And welcome to FT.

they will definitely make you weigh your bag & will charge you extra even if you have 16 kgs....i would recommend you stick to 2 bags & keep both under 15 kgs....

They hopefully havent become that bad. I did 18 kgs last month and they didnt complain. Although they did stop me from tossing in my carry on as well saying sir youre already above limit.

Thank you for your help! Yes, I was trying to keep my pieces of luggage to the minimum. However, looks like they can get really specific about their rules. Sounds a bit counter-intuitive that they don't prefer a single piece of luggage over 15 kg, instead of two, which will actually increase the overall weight (owing to dead weight of the extra bag itself)

a couple of weeks ago they told the person who was just in front of me in line that his bag weighs 16kgs so he either has to take out 1kg or pay the excess baggage charge....

It's not that simple. Any airlines will treat each customer as a single unit (seat, luggage, food, oxygen mask, lifeboat, IFE etc. etc.) By limiting it to 1 piece @ 15 kgs 9W is saving a lot of costs and at the same time making more money from this. Here's (my theory) how: less pieces of luggage to tag, track, manage, deliver or lose therefore less costs, by limiting weight & pieces in J & Y I'm sure 9W is able to negotiate better rates with the luggage handling unions and finally they can charge customers more money because of their restrictive policies!

Where did you buy this ticket ? Effective Aug 10, 2018, tickets issued in all countries outside India for standalone journeys within India in Economy will now enjoy an enhanced free baggage allowance of 25 kgs...
