Air India: Fleet Mix

http://www.livemint.com/2010/08/0921....html?atype=tp

Vaguely remember Jet also a few years back, leasing out some of it's 777's and choosing to use 330's instead on it's long haul routes. Have always thought that both the 777 & 330 both are in the same aircraft category (twin engine, wide-body, medium - long haul).

weird piece... since when did they plan to replace A310s with 787s? And how pray tell does leasing out 777s and leasing back 330s make financial sense?

Exactly my thoughts as well, on reading the article..!!! Can understand if the combination in question was the 747 & 330. They lease out the 747's currently with them and pick up on lease some 330's...in light of route rationalization and probably closure of certain long haul, non-performing routes..

A330 would make no sense at all, AI only has two left and went for an all boeing longhaul fleet, so i assume they don't have enough flight deck crew to add more capacity. OTOH, it could mean they have a lot of flight deck crew for A330 sitting around because they have so few aircraft The A310 have no commonality with the A330, so the A310 crew is of no use there.

A few 777s are leased and could be given back pretty quickly and yield better load factors. The 6 747s left with AI are not attractive to lesses.

Didn't they just have a consultant inhouse who advised them on everything?

Yeah there was some talk of a consultant coming on board to present a turnaround plan for the carrier..Don't know what happened to that. One A310 has been sold to Deccan 360 as a converted freighter...The number of A310's left must be rather few...

AI never cease to amaze...!!!

The AB3s are old and well past retirement age - and while they're damned useful as medium haul carriers on india - gulf type high traffic routes, AI might have considered getting 767s instead of 330s, especially as they are primarily a boeing shop, and boeing has been pushing 767 airframes pretty hard to other carriers in the same situation, from what I've read.

The 330 actually has the same airframe cross section as the 310 (and is supposed to be the "successor" to the 310, model wise), which must have made the logic of moving from 310->330 compelling to AI .. which does like to jump to the first available conclusion.

Hmmm... since when was aircraft aquisition for AI/IC anything logical? Airbus greased a few palms in the 80s and AI/IC ordered a ton of A320 and 310s. Recently Boeing got 'approval' for the AI longhaul fleet and Airbus sold IC quite a few A32S for the regional fleet. Methinks this is just an invite for the next round of bribery negotiations.

Tristars and 707s were very common indeed back in the 60s-80s
