However, do you want to burn a DSU for just an upgrade into a premium room, which you should get automatically if available at check in?

BTW, premium rooms often are classified as junior suites, which are not eligible for guaranteed upgrade. |
and I'm pretty sure the DSU can't be used for someone else right? I have a family member that's diamond and would love to ask him if I can use one of his DSU
|
Correct. "Award is not transferable, negotiable or redeemable for cash or other substitutions." In other words, the Diamond member needs to be staying in the room to which the suite upgrade applies.

You must be present in order to use your own DSU.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that even though a hotel had no rooms available for points, I could book it for C+P+DSU.
On reading back in this thread, I see that stargold mentioned this in February.

No wiKi so am I correct that the DSUs can only be used for either a paid stay or when using C&P and arent usable if on a pts only stay?

And since points only doesn't count for stay credits, I try to only book P+C or paid stays since I tend to just barely hit the Diamond minimums of 25 stays/yr (all stays are paid for out of my pocket, no stays paid for by my employer). |

^ Correct. Points only can't use DSU. I think you can use the 6K point/night upgrade to a suite with a points only stay but I've never used points for a suite upgrade.

C&P is great as you said since it counts towards status. However once you have qualified or requalified no need for any stay credits (OK they will count towards lifetime status, but for some 10 yrs isnt gonna happen any longer)
Thanks for answering |

Thanks for answering If you want a suite on a points stay, it's an additional 6K pts/night. I've only got 4 more stays for this year to requal for Diamond so once I reach 25 stays, I'll first burn my anniversary night and then burn points (I've got a ton of HGP points) for Hyatt stays. But of course I've still got a few more SPG stays to requal for Plat so I'm favoring SPG at the moment. I've got 2 DSUs remaining and doubt that I'll burn more than 1 of those this year. That being the case, I'll likely burn the last 1 or 2 in Jan/Feb 2016. |

Very true. And for lifetime status, it's strictly base points that count.

You can't upgrade a points only stay to a suite with 6k points per night (that's only applicable to Hyatt Daily Rates (on premium rooms at resorts). You can get a suite award booking at 50% premium to the base room points but these have a minimum of 3 nights.

Quick question. I understand DSUs need to be applied by the expiration date. The stay can be later. If I'm no longer Diamond by the time of the stay, any issue?
