I have an interesting situation. It's my first P&C redemption, and I have a P&C reservation for a suite (not a diamond upgrade, I'm only a platinum). On the phone the agent told me it would be 6000 pts plus the cash.

If you don't have enough points in your account to cover the P+C reservation within about a week of your stay, your rate will be changed to the hotel Hyatt Daily Rate.
So I used points instead, 3 rooms for 5 nights. I asked the rep when I'd need to have 200,000+ points in my account, she stressed, "you just need them in by check-in". That seemed quite lenient to me...more so than I remembered. And more so than your post suggests for P + C. Perhaps they are treated differently..? |
I booked 2 nights P+C in Park Hyatt Toronto with DSU. Then I tried to book Park Hyatt Seoul with C+P for 3 nights. They had 2 of the weekdays for C+P but the Friday night no C+P...also no DSU available at all. But I was glad to book both before they changed categories. I'm happy overall.

bankokiscool and mangoMan - what hotel P&C category(-ies)? Or maybe I missed it. Thank you. :)

I booked the new Nassau Hyatt resort for Thanksgiving week last night via the Diamond line, before it jumped from tier 4 to 5. Tried to use P + C and a DSU, but no P + C availability.

I also just made my first P&C redemption and was also offered a suite for 6K pts and $75 a night. Naturally I took it. Points were deducted from the account and confirmation email says "HYATT GOLD PASSPORT POINTS PLUS CASH AWARD COMBINED W/ TIER BENEFIT SUITE UPGRADE AWARD". This seems as if a DSU was applied, but I am only Platinum and have no DSUs in the account. Did I just get very lucky or is there something else about P&C I'm missing?

I have booked several Points and cash reservations lately. I did think it was strange that P+C reservations at HR appear to always be cancellable (I have seen both 24 and 48 hours) but I just booked a HH P+C reservation and it was a prepaid (uncancellable) rate.
I thought the inconsistency was kinda weird and also frustrating since all P+C must be booked over the phone where fine print is rarely available before booking. I didn't ask about cancellation policy when booking because all my past experience had been that they were cancellable rates. I think this is my third post here this week on the theme of "I like Hyatt but they are very inconsistent..." |
I have started booking them over twitter using DM. So much easier to find out the available nights and to book everything. I just check the terms, etc. online to make sure I understand afterward.
I know I have mentioned it on here before, but their twitter team is great. |
Is it best to use P+C if its available at the property? What is the general consensus on that?
I am waiting for my free night rewards(4 of them) through chase hyatt card and have points to use during our stays. We will be in Sydney 3 nights ( i plan to use the free nights here) I dont know if they will arrive in time to use March 18) Bangkok 4 nights (Cat. 4 $240 pn) Dubai 2 nights (Cat. 4 $250 pn) Paris 3 nights (use the last free night + points) Vienna 4 nigthts (Cat. 6 $500pn) I would like to keep my costs as low as possible (obviously would mean using points only) but i would like to maximize the value of the points ( any points i save i could use them for a future stay) |

Depending on which one you have, you can earn back a big chunk of the points you are spending, all in exchange for $100 a night on those Cat 4 stays... |

General consensus is P+C is bad value for Categories 1 and 7, as you end up paying more than 2 cents per point saved. Categories 2-6 are better value.

IMHO, Cat 7 is precisely where one would like to use P+C (if allowed). The value of the points you use should be calculated (roughly, I'm not backing out points on foregone cash expenditures) is (Available room price - cash portion of P+C) / Points portion of P+C. Your points are substituting for the cash difference. Cash differences are bigger at the most expensive properties.
Let's talk about PHV, where I'm not sure they do P+C. I sure wish they did. Even without the 20% current rebate on points, and even with rates dropping as the dollar strengthens, I'd rather pay 30,000 points than $800, since I would be getting $0.0267 per point. But what I would really like to do is pay them $300 plus 15,000 points, because then I am getting $0.0333 per point. This assumes I want to stay at PHV (which I do). So to finish this game, pick your favorite Cat 2-6 hotel, plug in the alternative cash price, and do the same math. Off the top of my head, you would have to be looking at >$566/night on a Cat 6 to get the same per point value on a C+P. |
