if they gurantee the 50USD rate with the suites /villas most people did book, well i would say its ok, but if they just say, we try to keepthe room type, thats not fair.

if you end up in a standard room you paid 50USd wow a 50% discount..

dp
Not even a 50% discount. More like a 28% discount at best for me -- if they are just referring to "standard rooms" with "upgrade based on availability", instead of re-confirmation of original accomodation type.

yes.

why not?
so sorry, the hotel promotional rate make this condition.
oh, so i have no choice but to use the reservation?
yes, so sorry. your credit card will be charged even if you don't show up.
thanks."

Does this count as acquiescence? or ratification?

Why consumer.privacy? Is this a lesson learned from a prior mistake where they sent a number of people booked on a Starwood rate debacle the email details of other people?

Was there not last year a pricing mistake with the Kao Lak Le Meridien? I though there was something.

The mail goes to the recipient as a BCC so you cannot see your address, much less anyone else. I guess they learned from the previous incident.

I don't recall that currently, but I do recall this rate (which was not a rate error):

Le Méridien Khao Lak Beach & Spa Resort, 48-59 US$ per night

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=599931

And according to SAtransplant:
Just to let you know, this hotel has been known to have promotional rates of Bt 999 per night per room ... that's approx. $25.
Shoulder season rate during a peak-period for some of these bookings, and a more standard type rate for bookings during most of the year? So really, what kind of deal is this, particuarly if the accomodations booked are not guaranteed?

Apparently they learned something but not enough.

I posted in that thread, too. The regular rate was $65 per night and under the 2 nights, get 1 night free promo, it came out to $130 for 3 nights. It didn't include breakfast, though.

This hotel has had rate issues before.

See this http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=498961 where the hotel was booked for like US$2/night.

This seems to be an annual kind of thing with them.

Le Meridien Khao Lak Spa and Beach Resort--$2 USD(85 Baht)!!!

..........

The rooms are listed as follows:

Deluxe---$2
Deluxe Pool-$2
Ocean Suite- $5
Deluxe Ocean Suite--$6
Lagoon Villa---$8
Pool Villa--$10
Oceanfront Pool Villa--$10

I cannot disagree more strongly. If you want to give in to their desire to unilateraly break your contract that is fine with me. However, your simple dismissal of the influence that the media gave to the outcome of both the:

The alitalia YYZ-LCA thread and
The AA EMMI Cheese miles thread.

should not be so easily dismissed. I was involved in both deals, and as anyone can tell you they would likely not have happened without the combined effort of many FTers who actively sought out the media and told them about the breach of contract that was happening.

What Starwood is doing is simply wrong. I flat out refuse to allow them to cancel my bookings and I will contact every single media organization on the page I put together. I also know that a lot of other FTers will help me do that.

Feel free to pay your $50USD if you want. However, I have a contract and I expect them to abide by it.

Post #578 by Martian:

The alitalia YYZ-LCA thread
The AA EMMI Cheese miles thread.

Do a search for these to find the specific threads. In both cases, the media (or the threat of talking to the media) played a strong part in getting the companies involved to honor the originial contract.
------------------------------------------

The historic AZ flight deal and hilarious cheese deal
are not relevant answers to my simple question.
I asked about Hotel Deals.

You said search for the YYZ-LCA thread.
I don't need to: I was lucky to be one of the first
to hold 4 FEDEX envelopes delivered the next morning.

With the paper tickets in my hand,
I was quite confident I would see Cyprus.
Maybe the media did something, I didn't notice it.
We know paper tickets are a pretty good bet.

But even the most-experienced predictors of
Hotel Deal endgames are surprised by the variability !

Now, if we can stop clogging this thread
with lengthy media company lists.....

There are two already-identified open issues
that we might still have some chance of influencing.

1) Can we CONFIRM our booked villas (or whatever) for $50 ?
i.e. not just a standby space-available situation.

2) If we agree to $50 pn, can it be a flex-type res?
i.e. cancel up to 24 hours prior w/o penalty.

If I could get a solid YES on both issues,
I actually think it still might be worth the trip for me.

I am guessing Starwood remains a bit uncertain
on their approach to the details,
thus their apparent lack of clarity so far.

They could inflexibly freeze up as Orbitz-Tokyo did,
or maybe show some flexibility
after assessing various arguments and potential costs.

I am going to start now by returning the email,
not checking any box, or making a third box.

I will simply say in one paragraph at the top
which of my two reservations I wish to select.

I will ask if they could agree to allow the two conditions
that are important to me for a workable solution.
If so, I would appreciate it, and be satisfied.
Thank you.

If they can't negotiate and make the trip workable,
then I will say I am dissatisfied, and in fact insulted
by the $50 solution for a run-of-house room.
They know that is a bogus offer.

But then I will just drop it.
No aggressive threats of badmouthing them
in the media or anything else.

The media cannot help us here,
but maybe we can help ourselves
in how we respond to Starwoods opening position.
