Hotels.com 15% Discount on GCs...But What if You Cancel?

eBay currently lists $100 Hotels.com gift cards for $85. I'm thinking about using some of these for upcoming stay at a no-loyalty-program hotel.

Hotels.com indicates that there is no cancellation fee until a couple of days before check-in.

If you pre-pay on the Hotels.com website with Hotels.com GCs, then cancel, what happens to the funds?

They will issue you a new gift card for the amount you pay.

Usually you can buy hotels.com gift cards for 20% off , but 15% is good too.

Yes, a new gift card in the amount refunded is sent by email. IME, the email came almost immediately after canceling.

How does one get hotel.com GCs for 20% off? Don't you need to wait for a promo?

You just need to monitor websites like Doctor of Credit. They typically will let you know when Airbnb or Hotels.com gift cards are on sale. They will be listed $85 for $100. They can take 1-5 business days before they are emailed. Sometimes you get lucky and get them the same day.

It's not bad getting 5x points on an INK card and sometimes shopping portals accidentally give you cash back. I don't know of any portals that allow for CB on gift card purchases.

Also, make sure you use a coupon code when booking. I don't believe you can get CB on bookings made with gift cards.

AMAX sync had recently promo for hotel.com cards,
ebay have them all the time usually $50 card for 40, or $100 for 85 or 80 they had this offer several times last few months.
A few months ago hotels.com sell them on their site $50 card for $40.
