Layover Question

I will be flying through HKG soon on my way to Bangkok. We arrive at 8:20pm and will be departing the next afternoon at 12:30pm.

Do you suggest we stay by the airport? Do trains run late if we decided to have a late dinner in Hong Kong or Kowloon?

Thanks for your insight.

Answer is simple. Stay at one of the three hotels at/near airport only if 1. You don't care about seeing the city at all AND 2. you are okay with those hotels' rate.

With such a late departure the next "morning" it would be crazy not to go into Kowloon or Central. The airport hotel choices are very poor compared to the in-city experience, and transport is very reliable plus runs long hours. Personally I like to stay at the Langham Place Mong Kok but dozens of other good choices.

what's your budget? four seasons right at the train station in central will be very convenient, and butterfly on wellington is walkable from the train station and is a 150-200$$ option usually (covered walkway all the way except the last 30 meters from the hotel).

arriving at 2030 you can head to town for dinner and do some sightseeing and also in the mornig to have breakfast before heading to airport.

Thanks for the insight. I plan to use Marriott points and will book the Marriott airport location.

What is the closest area of the city by train for dinner? In order to return to the hotel, do trains run late at night?

Closest tourist area would probably be Tsim Sha Tsui or Mong Kok but travelling from the Marriott at the airport, it's just easiest to go to Central (Hong Kong station). Besides the Elements mall, there's nothing by Kowloon station and really, if you're at Elements you could pretty much be in any first world mall.

As for the timetable for the Airport Express, you can find it here.

Normal RT fare is $180 but for same day it's $100, buy ticket at the kiosk[s] after exiting customs.

Why not stay at one of the many Marriott properties in town? As others have noted, the airport hotels all pale in comparison to the Island and even TST.

Staying in the city would be nearly as convenient. You could check in for tickets and baggage check at either the Central/IFC station or at the Kowloon station. There are free shuttles from major hotels to the airport express station from all over the island. I believe the checkin cutoff is 90 minutes before your flight. Then you hop the airport express to the airport (<30 minutes), head through security and to your gate.

Means less time wasted at the airport from check-in to departure and gives you more hotel and nightlife options being on the island.

Agree, it would be crazy not to check out Central or TST, given that Central is only 23 mins away from Airport via the train. Once you are at Central, Wanchai, Causeway Bay is accessible in 10mins by MTR.

Check out Ritz Carlton on top of Kowloon Station. Their lobby is at 103 Floor. Yes, 103/F
