We're thinking of staying at the Hilton Barbados in March.
We will be booked in Executive Floor - however, given the recent comments of lack of food in the evening, I want to ask previous guests about the distance to local restaurants in the vicinity og the hotel. We'll be travelling with a 2 years old boy.

How far to the city center in bridgetown/restaurants - can you walk?
How about supermarkets (probably need diapers during the stay)!

Thanks

From a food perspective my personal thoughts are that the exec lounge nibbles are not a replacement for meals - nor will you get to use it much if you have an infant as generally they will go to bed (fairly) early - which means you will probably use the lounge on shifts to escape cabin fever - as we did! However, you do get breakfast in there. I'd weigh up the extra costs of breakfast as part of your room rate and the additional cost of the exec level and work out the difference. Outside of that there's not much use for the lounge I found.

It is very close to Bridgetown and walkable for adults (20 min walk or about 1.5/2 miles?), but as there is no pavement/sidewalk on the way in I'd be somewhat wary with a 2 year old or a buggy. You could walk along the beach ( a very nice walk) but again, probably not with a 2 yr old or buggy. A cab is a fixed BDS$20. There isn't much in Bridgetown in terms of food so not really an eating destination - just a day trip for duty free shopping/clothes.

However, if you go along the coast the other way there is a lot more on offer. On the doorstep is Brown Sugar - not eaten there but I'm sure there are reviews available. During the day there is also a flying fish burger shack just by Pebbles beach (5 mins walk from hotel). BDS$6 for an awesome fish burger (compared to $30 for the dessicated Hilton version).

A 10/15 min/5 min drive (BDS$15 cab) walk is an Italian restaurant called Mama Mia's. Not too expensive by Barbados standards -about BDS$30 for a pizza - although can get busy so call to reserve and is walkable. One caveat if I remember correctly is that it is cash only - double check. Opposite is 39 Steps, which is more of an 'adult' restaurant, similar prices, but excellent food - albeit a limited menu. Again, walkable.

If you choose to go further, then it's definitely a car/cab, but you then get larger air con sports bar type venues like TGI Fridays and Bubbas (pretty large, clean, child friendly and reasonably priced (plus large screen sports!). And in the resort areas line Rockley (15-20 mins drive) then you'll get the local KFC/MacDs equivalent called Cheffette, plus cafe/restaurants - not tried any. It goes on from there.

Going to the West Coast is somewhat of a schlep and there are some high quality (and priced) restaurants up the coast, but they change all the time so best look closer to the time. However, bearing in mind that you'll probably want to eat early evening then you shouldn't have problems with reservations etc.

That said, the food at the Hilton is edible, and food is free for kids under 5 so do take advantage of the offer. It's just not where you'd want to eat for more than a few days (personal opinion).

Finally, we wanted to travel light and buy diapers and formula out there. Not a problem - we went up to the Big B supermarket at Rendevouz and bought it all there, however if you want something closer there are loads of places in Bridgetown or for something quick there is a pharmacy just by the entrance to Pebbles beach (on the approach to Hilton). Opposite there is also a garage with a small food court for all the basics.

Hope that helps

Another vote for Bert's. Us Canucks are creatures of habit, especially during hockey season. Keep in mind that Bert's is mostly open air, so it can be a bit warm.

In the same Rockley Beach area as Bert's and Champers, there are several cafes. Directly across from the Accra Beach Hotel is a small mall with an Italian cafe, bank, and maybe a Chinese restaurant. Moving back towards Bridgetown in the Direction of Mama Mia's there is Opa! It might be a bit pricey, but the food is tasty and it is directly on the water.

Please help. Am I missing something did you get 7 nights at this hotel for 205K?

The best I could do was 2 x 145k for 8 nights through AMex.

Should I have looked into this reward mentioned above?

The VIP rewards chart shows that you can get 7 nights for 262500 Hhonors points for the Barbados Hilton(a Cat 7 hotel.) I'm guessing that the 205k points was the old rate before the devaluation last year.

Will be staying at this hotel in Jan/Feb for 12 nights over three trips... any recommendations on the best place to book to get the best rate?

So far, expedia.ca using GreatCanadianRebates.ca for 3% cashback is working out to $282CDN before tax ($331 CDN after tax) for a king oceanview room (4 nights)...

Can't seem to find any coupons to stack on top of it either... I can match the price at Orbitz and use a 5% off coupon for $50 off (2% more discount compared to cashback option via expedia)

It was unfortunate, but this property wouldn't honor our corporate rate!!! Seeing as it would be "out of policy", I am stuck at the Savannah... decent enough, but it's no Hilton.

I wish the rate was more reasonable...

Besides those already mentioned great restaurants/bars...
There are lots of others restaurants near the Hilton, there is really no reason to eat at the hotel, and its meh typical hotel food. Except for the lunches/drinks if you are by the beach and don't want to wander into town. Although that fish shack down the street from the Hilton was an excellent find....We ended up walking there for lunch a few times during our 6 night stay at the Hilton couple of years ago.

Some other highly recommended restaurants:
they are pricey, but well worth it as most are by the waters:
- Aqua
- The Restaurant at SouthSea(Probably my fave for various reasons)
- The Cliff
- Lobster Alive (Nice live/whole Grenadian spiny lobsters)
- Pisces

And as mentioned before, Bert's is always good for drinks after dinner to watch some hockey games...Although, you'll have to excuse their bias for the Ottawa Senators...
