We were there two weeks ago. You saw some people, but not very many, coming or going by taxi. To be fair, the hotel seemed quite empty when we were there, so that likely played a part. The hotel is definitely not in Tulum (saying it's in Akumal would be more accurate but Akumal is also a 6-7 minute drive), and while the drive is easy it would be a fair distance in a taxi. You'd probably have to make arrangements to have one come out there, no idea what the cost would be. When we were checking out a guest next to us was having a very stressful time because they had booked a taxi to the airport and it hadn't shown up. The hotel offered to call a taxi right away, but for that you're probably looking at a 30 minute wait.
Have you considered renting a car? We did and it made everything much easier, including going to some dinners in Akumal when we didn't eat at the Conrad. |
Was at the Conrad 12/22 - 12/27.
Beautiful property, but somewhat isolating without transportation. Taxis are available by asking the bellhops. Cost us $35 to go from the Conrad to the Mayan ruins near Tulum. Another $35 from the ruins to hotel/beach row in Tulum & another $40 (driver initially quoted us $60) back to the Conrad. Worth the trip though. Got a free diamond upgrade to a 3rd floor (aka "Ocean View") room in Casa 5, but because of the trees had very limited view of the ocean. They allowed us to move to Casa 6 which has much less vegetation in front of it and had an unobstructed view of the ocean from the 3rd floor there. Casa 6 is next to the Hilton and was 4/10 of a mile from the Conrad's breakfast/lobby/main bar area. The walk didn't really bother me, but it might some people. They will come pick you up in a cart if you call, but sometimes they're slow getting to you so we mostly just walked it. Breakfast was good & included for diamond/gold members. It is the same buffet style setup every day, but they will cook your eggs however you want them. Food & alcohol prices were not out of line for hotel prices except mimosas at breakfast were overpriced. Had dinner at Kengai & Maratea. Both were good, but one of my favorite things I had was the Philly Cheesesteak at Ultra Mar (the outside bar). That outside bar area was cool and they had live music or a DJ most nights. (I wish the Conrad in Punta de Mita had an area like that.) Chaak Bar was a neat little place too. Was surprised how empty it was the two nights we went there. There were surprisingly very few Christmas decorations on the property. I inquired about a day pass to the Hilton & was told a day pass (9 am to 6 pm) was $150/day/person & a night pass (6 pm to 10 pm) was $190/night/person. Didn't try to negotiate or pursue that any further. There were several jacuzzis next to the pools, but oddly most were not heated. The only one that was somewhat heated during our stay was in front of Casa 1. You take a short path through the jungle to get to that pool area which is kind of neat. There's also a rock formation that juts out into the ocean not far from there. It appears to be off the Conrad property, and there's not a clear path to get to it. I found a way out there (not difficult) and walked out onto the rocks only to be run off by a lifeguard from the property next door who started blowing his whistle at me. Overall, I would recommend the Conrad Tulum although I don't know whether I'll go back especially for five nights. I think I'd rather stay on the beach/hotel row in Tulum or maybe mix it up and do Tulum beach for a couple of nights and a couple of nights at either the Conrad or Hilton. If you're looking for a peaceful place to just relax and hang out at the pool or on the beach, the Conrad is perfect for that, but I got a little stir crazy after about 3 days, and it didn't help that it was rainy during most of our stay. I'd give it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. |

back from our 9-night trip (3 fhr, 5 points, 1 cert). some info, tips, etc.
- we loved the property - it's beautiful. it's about 15-20 mins from tulum proper (we had a car, but only left a few times). beautiful grounds and exceptional staff. everyone was so friendly and eager to help make sure we were having a good time. - we were there with our 1-year old; they put us in casa 3 which was super convenient. there were numerous times we needed to run back to the room from the pool, beach, etc and it made it all the more convenient. - they upgraded us to the 3rd floor. view was great from casa 3, and we used the plunge multiple times a day. it's kind of like a big outdoor tub and you can fill it anywhere from cold to hot (hotter than hot tub hot). was great relaxing in there in the mornings and at night. - the food is really good. breakfast is huge and amazing. aside from the obvious, make sure you find out what the special is each day (the station is in the room on the right, left of the chilaquiles). while we were there the specials included mole, gourmet truffle breakfast sandwich on a croissant, lobster and shrimp omelettes, and a bunch of others (rotates each day). we tried pretty much all of the eateries, our favorites were the beach restaurant next to the pool (one of the days the chef made us two different tuna courses gratis) and the sushi restaurant (it's not on the menu but you can ask for omakase - it's 8 courses and it's awesome). only thing we didnt really like was a pasta we had at the mediterranean place (wasnt cooked right). portions are also substantial at the restaurants. - live music at ultra mar pretty much every night. we were also there during the world cup and they had a huge screen setup showing all of the games. made it a lively place. cocktails are also great there. - we did the full moon party one night. entertainment and food were good, open bar includes black label/woodford/patron level spirits, but overall not worth the price IMO. - they're very attentive with service on the beach, pools, hammocks, etc if you need drinks, etc. - there is a 7-11 on the other side of the freeway from the entrance if you want to stock up on beer, snacks, etc. - sargassum wasn't bad at all. they had people cleaning the beach every day. - received all of the credits we had expected - $275 fhr special offer, $100 fhr regular (they made it clear at check-in that these stack), $100 amex offers, $250 aspire, $200 plat hotel. - really appreciated the little things.... extra dishes or amuse at meals, bottles of water at valet, bottle of wine and a bread/cheese platter in the room when we arrived, etc had a great time and it was a nice secluded escape. obviously if you want to be in tulum proper you should stay in that area, it's also great and where we would have stayed pre-child or if she was older. for now, the conrad was perfect. |

The staff was great. Really enjoyed getting to know a few of them. The weather was the most negative aspect of our stay, and there's nothing the hotel could do about that. |

Great review. I agree about staying in a variety of areas in the Mayan Riviera. We like renting an airbnb in Aldea Zama, but it would also be ideal to stay a few days on the beach in Tulum, as it can be such a pain to drive the beach road. We've also talked about maybe staying inland in Valladolid for a more authentic, colonial experience. And it's nice to just relax in a luxury hotel.

Is there self-park parking at the hotel or is it only valet? Thanks.

Checked out today. There are pros and cons to this hotel, but one thing that really annoyed me is that they basically just pre-authorized the full paid rate for every day on my credit card when I was on a points stay. And apparently I was not the only one this happened to.

What's the situation with additional beds? We are looking to stay here with 2 adults and 2 kids (7 and 10), but the only rooms that supposedly sleep 4 are the smallest rooms with 2 queen beds. I find it hard to believe that a 500 sqft. room can sleep 4 but a 1,500 sqft suite can't. Heck, even the 2,000 sqft. presidential suite only shows it sleeps 3!

Conrad Tulum is offering a 4th night free plus an additional $100 food & beverage credit (so $200 total) for Virtuoso & Hilton Impresario bookings through December 23rd, 2023.
