But it's a buffet, right? So how do they police the tacky policy - follow you round with a clip-board ?

I think this is one city where I'll stick with IHG, and take up the upsell to the absolutely lovely Club lounge

Diamond benefits

Free drink voucher
plus
1: free gift of your choice
2: after 20 stays another free gift (so two 2 free gifts on every stay)
3: upgrade everytime ..even had the 2 bedroom apartment.
4:late check 2pm
5: free NZ Herald which initially was not really a benefit but with no papers at the Koru Club it's great perk.
there is no Executive lounge

I suppose the value of all this depends on the nature of the gifts ...

Sounds good! My comment was fuelled by the welcome gift I received at an Intercontinental last weekend: a single green apple.

It was nicely presented, on a plate with napkin and knife and fork: and it was a large apple. But it was only an apple. Maybe I'll get two on my next visit .

Both of apples sound lovely, but alas the man with the clipboard is watching and that apple came from the hot food area. No go for us lowly gold folk.

Diamond is full PLUS being able to order off the menu. The only thing they charge Diamonds for at breakfast is specialty coffee (latte etc.).

I also got 4 drink coupons for either a 2 or 6 night stay; I suspect 2. (I had three back to back 2-night stays on points because originally it was paid, points, paid and the middle points stay was non-refundable due to the All Blacks game so I couldn't easily switch it to 6 nights on points which was sad since I paid about an extra 30k points due to missing the 5th night free.)

I probably got a one room type upgrade based on the hotel tour we took in preparation for the upcoming conference we are planning. (and sixth of seven floors). The All Blacks game was over the weekend and the hotel was at 100%. I believe both the DT and Intercontinental and probably other hotels in the area too were requiring a two-night stay and making all stays non-refundable. So, I didn't expect much.
