Master Hurricane Flossie thread

I'm curious the possible impact the huricanne approaching Hawaii will have on HNL connections on tuesday evening back to the mainland?

I know a real hurricane hasn't hit Hawaii in a long time, what are the implications to air travel?

Thanks in advance.

Hurricanes are iffy, at best. I'd just be cautious and stay tuned to further information as the hurricane comes closer.

When Iniki struck, IIRC, flights that did take off for HNL and were beyond the half-way point to Oahu were diverted to Maui. Kauai's airport was shut down completely.

And, putting the mod hat on, I'm going to move this thread to the Hawaii forum for housekeeping purposes.

Big Island Prepares As Flossie Slowly Approaches Hawai'i

Headline from Honolulu Advertiser, updated 1:40pm today: http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar...789362045.html

Big Island Mayor Harry Kim says emergency workers are beginning to make preparations. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, says the Mayor.

Fingers crossed!

Exclamation

FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE....

Hurricane Flossie continues to move towards the Hawaiian Islands. Flossie continues to maintain category 4 status on the Saffir-Simpson scale with winds around 135 miles per hour. It is forecast to weaken steadily over the next few days, but maintain hurricane strength as it passes the longitude of the Hawaiian Islands.

As of 11 pm (Hawaiian time), the center of Flossie was about 580 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, at 14.4 North, 148.2 West. The Hurricane is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 miles per hour.

Flossie is a small storm spacially, with the strongest winds being confined close to the center of circulation. The main impacts for the Hawaiian Islands, and the Big Island in particular, will be increasing rough surf along southeast facing beaches. The worst weather should impact the islands on Tuesday into Tuesday night as Flossie makes its closest approach to Hawaii then.

Residents and visitors to Hawaii should pay attention to the forecast track of Flossie and watch for any watches and warnings to be posted by the Central Pacific Hurricane Forecast Center.

Mrs. kaukau and I are flying HA157 OGG-HNL today at 12:05pm, returning HA320 Wednesday 2:35pm. (Free Platinum u/g's to F. Thanks, HA! ). Looks good for today: sunny and light winds over Maui County. Time will tell for Wednesday's flight. Here's hoping Flossie stays well to the south.

Pomaika'i to our Big Island bruddahs & sistahs! (And the rest of our State, too!)
