First time to Honolulu
Hi there...
This will be my girlfriend and my first time to Honolulu and, needless to say, I want it to be perfect.
I won a voucher for a free week stay in any RCI resort, so I was thinking that Honolulu would be a great place. Has anyone stayed at any of the RCI resorts in Honolulu and can recommend one that is particularly wonderful?
Also, does one need to rent a car in Honolulu or is it more cost-effective to take shuttles and taxis? If a car is recommended, any suggestions for good rates?
Thanks!

Hi Mongrel,
Welcome to Flyertalk! Are talking of RCI as in the timeshare exchange? Once you answer that question perhaps I can help you more. Slippah's is really the afficianado here though. I have been to Honolulu many times. It is very beautiful. There's lots of aloha there. Make sure to get outside of the city. You will be missing the rest of this beautiful island if you don't.
When we go to Honolulu we do not rent a car. The traffic is a nightmare. We take a taxi from the airport to our hotel and then rent a car for a day if we want to really explore. We have also taken the BUS, which is a lot of fun because the locals ride it too and sometimes they will talk story with you. I love to hear stories, especially from the senior citizens.

The RCI timeshares in Waikiki are fine, but you would find a wider selection of nicer resorts on the other islands. Not sure what kind of RCI time share you are entitled to (gold crown, etc).
You do not need a car in Waikiki, but you may want to get a car for one day to explore the island. The north shore is a must - Haleiwa, Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline, shrimp trucks. You can also have fun one day by renting a moped. With thsi you can get to Aloha Tower Marketplace, Ala Moana Shopping, Diamond Head. Can't go on highways though.

Since Hilton is in the RCI network, you might be able to book the vacation club at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu. For more info about this property, do a search in the Hilton forum. I highly recommend it.
