Hostel in/ near the Castro?

I'll be in San Francisco for a few days next month. Trying to do it on a budget, so I'll most likely stay in a hostel. As I'm travelling on my own, they tend to be the best places to hook up with other travellers (like-minded or otherwise ).

Can anyone recommend a hostel in or near the Castro? Are there any? Or am I better to stay somewhere like USA Hostels, not far from Union Sq?

Thanks in advance.

Google is your friend:

Their are no actual hostels anywhere near Castro and Market, as most are clustered downtown or up by Fort Mason. I recommend downtown, as you are much closer to transit that way, but the one at Fort Mason has its devotees too.

Not a hostel, but it's well located and not expensive. Their pied a terre room is about $100/night and they throw a happy hour and give you breakfast. I've always met interesting like-minded people there.

I tried to book it for this weekend but they're completely full. I took ebayj's advice and went to the hostel site. I booked two nights at the Dakota and will report back after this weekend. It's not a terrible location, Post and Taylor, but it's certainly not 'crawling home' distance from the Castro.

You could try the Metro Hotel, which is within walking distance of the Castro. I've had friends stay there and say for the price, it is a great deal.

SF Hostels: http://www.sfhostels.com/

YMCA Point Bonita: http://www.ymcasf.org/ptBonita/accomodations.html
(far from Castro and Union Square, but you could consider this place for a day or two if you plan to stay in this beautiful area along the coast)

While I greatly appreciate the comforts and convienence of the Inn On Castro (www.innoncastro.com) I do also appreciate that for some trips saving money is more important. I perfer the Travelodge on Market Street, which is a little walk, but not too far, from the Castro (you can also use Muni). At about $60-$100 for a room it's better than some (http://www.travelodgesfcentral.com/).

While I appreciate the comfort and breakfast of the Inn On Castro (321 Castro Street - www.innoncastro.com) if you're looking for a less expensive option try the Travelodge on Market Street (http://www.travelodgesfcentral.com/). It's walkable, but sort-of far, but you can also take MUNI. Prices are around $60-$100 depending on day...

I was thinking of staying there this weekend but the prices seem to have jumped. Earlier this year I remember prices around $80/night. This weekend it was closer to $129. "Walkable, but sort of far" is a pretty good description. I remember feeling like is was midway between the Castro and downtown.

True, and there was a time when it was much friendlier than a hostel. Or at least that is what I have been told. But it's definitely thisclose to Market and Castro.

Thanks for the suggestions. They look great but are a bit out of my price range for a 5 night stay. Particularly since the £ seems to be crashing further every time I check

Loks like it'll be USA Hostels. I may splash out on the last night if I'm feeling flush.

Thanks again.

I guess it all depends on your point of view.

The Village House (literally on the corner of Castro & 18th) on 18th Street and 24 Henry on Henry Street are both lovely guest houses. http://www.24henry.com

Very friendly staff and a great budget option.

Parker Guest House is really well located for Castro and extremely friendly, sure you could arrange some reasonable rates with them if you are giving them business on a regular basis, the smaller rooms are pretty reasonable. http://www.parkerguesthouse.com/
