I used to travel there a lot for work...Montevideo is quiet but there's a growing scene... even Punta del Este, which was always the playground (and still is for the most part) for straight Argentinians now even has a little gay beach, very appropriately called Playa Chihuahua :-)

We are visiting in February for week, any updates on a place to stay; An apartment near the beach in the center would be great, but a decent hotel would be good too.
