Film: "Touch of Pink" with Jimi Mistry - Cute!

(Moderator - if more appropriate to OMNI than GLBT, by all means, please move)

Jimi Mistry (of "The Guru") stars in this funny and cute film about a gay, muslim Canadian from Toronto, living an openly gay life in London, whose mother comes from Toronto to visit. There's a word which isn't coming to me now which is used to describe people of Indian sub-continent extraction who hail from places of the former British empire. Mistry's family is one such family - originally from India, forcibly repatriated to Kenya (during colonial times) as indentured servants, from where Mistry and his mother immigrated to Toronto. (Sounds more complicated to follow than it is...)

Anyway, his mother comes to visit, and much of the film revolves around how to come out to her, and the drama surrounding weddings, grandchildren, etc. and the pressures faced by gay people who are from families of conservative cultures. There are a lot of cute moments in the film which ring very, very true - like he "cleans" up his apartment before the arrival of his mother, putting away the porn and sexy photos and anything remotely "gay"...

I saw this film with a muslim friend of mine, and we both agreed that the ending was very unrealistic. I won't spoil it for you, but suffice it to say that the ending was written as a vision of how things SHOULD be in a more perfect world, not as how things really happen. If the story was about what REALLY happens in real life, it would not be a "romantic comedy" - it would be a tragedy.

Mistry does an excellent job - I just love him.

This reminds me of the movie (maybe from 10 years ago) called "The Wedding Banquet".

Taiwanese guy living in NYC with bf, parents from Taiwan comes to visit etc.

He even went as far as getting married to a female! and telling his parents his male "partner" was his roomate. (At the end the parents found out).

It was sort of like "Wedding Banquet"

I saw a "Touch of Pink" here at Outfest in LA and thought that it was a decent film. Although the Cary Grant bits were a bit annoying at times, the film does take some time to find its rhythm, and the story is a bit contrived, it was an interesting story that people should go out and see. It was a lot like the Wedding Banquet, but a lot lighter (more comedic). Suleka Mathew (who plays the main character's mother) was just so fun to watch - she reminded me a bit of my own mother. It was also neat to see how an Indian wedding is put together, kind of reminded me of scenes from Bend It Like Beckham (which I admit was better). Not the most glowing review, I know, but you should go see a "Touch of Pink"...it was a really sweet movie.

Agree - though, I believe the story was supposed to be a kind of modern-day spoof of those old Doris Day romantic comedies with Rock Hudson and Cary Grant - kind of like that recent one with Renee Zellweger.

She did a great job playing the guilt-trip mother. (Favorite line: "This is the face of a mother whose son has stabbed a dagger right through her heart! " LOL)

Yes, I liked Bend I Like Beckham better, too. If you liked the Indian wedding scenes, you may like Monsoon Wedding.

Ummmm.... 2 stars (out of 4)

Just saw this at the Quad here in NYC tonight.

AS we have a dearth of gay films in and near FVX, where I live, I am probably more tolerant of this movie now than when I would have been when I lived in SF. It felt a bit forced and contrived. I LOVE Indian wedding movies but this one was short on that too. (Yes, I know, it was not supposed to BE an Indian wedding movie...).

The actor who played the lover, Giles, was good, I thought... and I liked, Dolly, the mother of the dentist-fiance'. Giles' dorky-gawky sister was fun.

Billy-Bob says, "If this is the "gay" movie playing in your town, go see it. If you have a choice of gay movies, you might be better off seeing another."
