FTers favorite dining and drinking in Munich

Dergon_gf and I going for a few days in March.

We don't have a set dining agenda.....got some funky cool eats? Fine dining? Stylish gastropub? Local dive with lots of character? A place with the best cocktails or biggest beers? Let me know.

Thanks .....all input welcomed. :)

Hofbrauhaus is awesome! One of (if not the) largest beer halls in the world.

Also, be sure and visit Dachau concentration camp for a memorable experience.

Happy travels. Munchen is a great city!

dergon darkhelm Feb 22, 2009 3:10 pm

Thanks! Looking forward.

Bah! Just noticed I spelled Munich wrong :( ----- can some moderator hook me up and get rid of my typo? thanks :)

The Augustiner brauhaus right by the Karlsplatz/Stachus S-Bahn stop is a sure bet for me. I didn't care too much for the Hofbrauhaus.

There are several smaller places right around the Frauenkirche, including an Andechs restaurant and beer joint, only it is quite small compared to the other places mentioned.

I was just in there on Tuesday for a beer. Very quiet in late afternoon. I had a friend take me to their actual brewery later that evening which is a couple miles away.

My favorite place for shopping in Downtown Munich, Dallmayrs, great food, deli, cigars, bakery, coffee that is the best in the world. address: Dallmayr, Dienerstraße 14-15

The Augustiner brauhaus is better than the Hofbrauhaus but it is still a fun place to visit. You can't go wrong with anything in the Marianplatz area.

husker267 Feb 22, 2009 9:24 pm

My perennial favorites are Augustiner Am Dom - next to the Frauenkirche. And the Ayinger restaurant (name is escaping me) across the street from the Hofbrau, next to the Hard Rock.
Now I'm hungry for some Scheinhaxn and a mass!

HereAndThereSC Feb 22, 2009 9:29 pm

I'll second just about any place that's been mentioned.

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with the dress code at Augustiner Kellar just up from the Hauptbanhof (pardon my spelling)? I was there on Valentine's night and it seems like they were turning around people that were "underdressed".

I second that. Augustiner Brauhaus is way better than the Hofbräuhaus.

I like that, too.

We have our monthly gathering always at the Airbräu (MUC Central Area).

MflyerCVG Feb 23, 2009 9:30 am

if you're looking for a great breakfast, I'd recommend heading to the Victualsmarkt, right off the Neues Rathaus for some weisswurst and a half liter of weissbier. There are a bunch of places to get freshly made sausages with sweet mustard... make sure you dive right in, no fork and knife needed, best Breakfast I ever had while living in Germany!

The Hofbrauhaus is a must for a beer hall, good food too! if the weather is nice, check out the Chinese Beer garden in the English Garden, one of the biggest biergardens in the works, easy to get to, and you can keep your 1L glass for ~3EUR, much cheaper than the ~8EUR you'll pay at the Hof

HereAndThereSC Feb 23, 2009 11:11 am

That's not quite accurate. Technically you're paying the pfand, which is the deposit. You don't own the mass, and you are expected to return it. If you decide to keep it, you're breaking the "pfand law" :)

[And I'm sure that it's been done plenty of times before].

Fine dining: Retter's Frauenstrasse 10 closed Sunday & Monday across from the Viktualienmarkt

etch5895 Feb 23, 2009 5:53 pm

There is also a Paulaner restaurant / biergarten and a Weihenstephen restaurant in the vicinity of Isartor. I'm not too fond of Weihenstephen beer (it has a bad aftertaste to me), but the Paulaner restaurant is really good, and you can sit outside if it is warm enough.

Sausage and beer fro breakfast. Man am I looking forward. :)

I can see the conversation with dergon_gf now.

"But dear, it's part of the culture! We've got to fit in. *turns to vendor* Sure I'll hve another breakfast litre. " ;)

thanks for input so far, all. Quite helpful.

Very True, however, when you return your Maß and token to reclaim your pfand, if you ask at the pfand refund desk (after you've returned yours), they have used maß glasses for sale that are 4EUR (this was the price a few years back, could be more now). They'll even give you a nice bag and some tissue paper to protect from chipping. I wouldn't recommend trying to sneak the maß out either, especially in the busy summer months. They have undercover security near the exits like at the Hof that try pretty hard to keep you from stealing the mugs.

I like Spatenhaus an der Oper (across the "Platz" from the Opera and the Residenz Palace). The food and the beer are all typical Bavarian and all, but in a more sophisticated setting, compared to Hofbraeuhaus and the like.

Those touristy places can be fun, but are not for everyone. I find them too noisy, not clean enough, and the service inconsistent. Not to mention that tables are shared with strangers who, IME, will certainly smoke.:td:

mag Feb 27, 2009 7:28 am

simplified:

- go downtown / old town, walk around frauenkirche (church) or down a street called "tal" for bavarian food.
- walk "5 hoefe" and maximilianstraße for luxury- or window- shopping
- walk odeonsplatz, briennerstr., ludwigstr., residenzpark just to walk...

- go to a neighbourhood called glockenbachviertel for drinks at night (yes, it's gay, but it's also where the cool bars are) or schwabing, tuerkenstr. and surroundings, same, not gay.

that's all easy going, you can look it up in your guidebook...

plenty more things to do, it's a great and safe city...

enjoy.

correct about the "touristy places" although in many munich places, tourists and locals mix. (not really in hofbräuhaus).

the "sharing with strangers" thing is bavarian... it is not meant to be rude. in many traditional places, inside or beergarden, tables seat maybe 10 - 12 pax, so you just sit down and join... ;)

and: no more smoking in restaurants in germany (in general with some exceptions)

HereAndThereSC Feb 27, 2009 8:07 am

Personally I think that sharing a table is a lot of fun. You meet all kinds of people and next thing you know, you're doing schnapps with strangers, and after a few of those, everybody speaks 'drunkenese'. :D

Not anymore. Bavaria has the most severe smoking ban law in Germany. No smoking allowed in any kind of public building, bar or restaurant. The German legislation got pretty tough on smokers the last two years.

Bavarian bar owners have also been among the most creative in getting around the ban, what with the emergence of smoking clubs, etc.

I have nothing against sharing tables, my problem is with someone smoking 20cm from me. I haven't been there since 2007, so I didn't know about the smoke ban; great news.
I had the pleasure of living in Munich for 3 years, so I am fully aware of how friendly people there are.

the most genuine Starkbier-experience will be at the "Nockerberg".
It´s Oktoberfest-like feeling. But watch the beer: it´s one of the strongest beers in the world and knocks out a lot of big guys after the first Mass:D

lemieux66 Mar 2, 2009 4:36 pm

To bring in a more upscale, but still very Bavarian like option:

"Käfer Schänke" in the Prinzregentenstrasse
and "Schuhbeck´s Tiroler Stub´n" (1 Mich. star) at the Platzl (next to Hofbräuhaus) offer both very high level cuisine but with strong Bavarian touch.
Both of them are a MUST, if guiding my international co-workers through Munich.

One of the best for cocktails: "Schuhmann´s" near Maximilianstrasse or "Lenbach" at the Lenbachpalais.

For all of them normaly reservation is neccassary.

Enjoy your trip ! :)

lemieux66 thanks for the info ^
3 weeks of hard training for the Starkbier ahead:D

Enoy your time in Munich.

supermasterphil Mar 6, 2009 3:32 am

Last saturday, I dined at Freisinger Hof. It was my first time and it was brilliant. Very good service, perfect food and therefor not overpriced (meaning not cheap but well worth the money)

I recommend to reserve a table in advance.

MW_2000 Mar 6, 2009 1:50 pm

A perennial favorite of ours is Zum Alten Markt (www.zumaltenmarkt.de). It's a small restaurant just off the Viktualienmarkt. Great food annd always wonderful friendly service.

f0zzyNUE Mar 7, 2009 3:35 am

my favorite bar is the ver-o-peso near the gasteig. it is very tiny and you will get the best caipirinha in munich ... :-) they also offer brazilian food.
another great bar is pusser's bar in the heart of munich - you have to try their "pain killer" :-)

dergon darkhelm Mar 8, 2009 1:11 pm

Well. We're here.:)

Thank you all for the great recommendations! The concierge is gonna be busy making reservations for us I think ;)

lemieux66 Mar 8, 2009 7:49 pm

So once again:
Enjoy your say, though it´s a shame due to the weather there will be no biergarten experiences for you. :)

Not sure what the current weather is like but when I was in Munich the weekend before, both Saturday and Sunday it was definitely warm enough to have lunch in a beergarden. I spent lots of time sitting outside in cafés having coffee.

Do you prefer the 1st floor or 2nd floor at Spatenhaus?

Howie721 Dec 3, 2009 9:47 am

Hi,

I will be in MUC for a few days, next week. Having been there a few years ago, anything special going on next week that 2 brothers (mid 20s) and father would enjoy doing/seeing? I think there is a Bayern Munich game but obviously thats on Sunday and I will already be out of there by then.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
