Actually, the Bayern München game is on Saturday, Dec. 12. However, it's an away game. TSV 1860, in the 2nd Bundesliga, does have a game on Saturday Dec. 12 at 1pm in the Allianz Arena.

In terms of "typical male" activities, the BMW museum might be of interest.

Yep, already plan on seeing that museum. I have heard pretty good things. Any other sights/things to do that come to mind?

Hi,

I will be in MUC for a few days, next week. Having been there a few years ago, anything special going on next week that 2 brothers (mid 20s) and father would enjoy doing/seeing? I think there is a Bayern Munich game but obviously thats on Sunday and I will already be out of there by then.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Actually there is a Bayern Munich game next week on Tuesday, but it will be in Turin (last Championsleague pre-round game), so this seems to be a little far away for you.
There are many Christmas-Markets going on at this time of the year.
My favorite is located at the "Chinesischer Turm", within the English Garden.

Emjoy your trip.

My wife and I may be spending New Year's Eve in MUC. I see that the Ratskeller has a Silvester program. Are there any other options that you can recommend? Thanks in advance.

I'll be in MUC end of Dec. Looking forward to it! This thread has been a help.

Years ago when I last visited, there was a cafe in Marienplatz that was upstairs, directly across from the glockenspiel. Does anyone know if this place still exists? I wouldn't mind trying to make a reservation for oh, 10h50 :D if I can.

It's appropriately called, Cafe Glockenspiel, I believe. Yes, it still exists.

Their website is:

http://www.cafe-glockenspiel.de/

They don't appear to have an English version of the site though.

However, you can certainly figure out their hours, etc. by reviewing the website.

This thread is a couple years old and I'm sure most of the recommendations still hold, any new places to consider that haven't been mentioned?

Mrs Sweet Willie does like German food but not near as much as I do, so any non-German/Bavarian recommedations would be appreciated to give her a dining/lunch 'break'.

Munich eats

Yes, I love Rusticana. It's a great place. BEST ribs I've ever had and I've eaten them all over the south of the USA.

Also for non-German food, try Vinh, great Vietnamese food not far from center. On the weekend the owner MIGHT do some magic for you. He's a total hoot!

For German fare, I always take my out-of-towners to the Ratskeller on Marienplatz. I think the food is very good and the clientele is mostly Bavarians! Be sure to try the cheesy spetzle.

For nice fresh food or a great burger try, Cosmo Grill. It's Germany's version of delicious fast food.

Also there is a nice noodle bar/sushi place next to the Apple Store off of Marienplatz. I'm not sure what the name is but I would often stop by and grab a bowl of udon noodles on a cold Muenchen day.

If you can get out of town, a trip to Kloser Andechs is a true local experience. The local monks make beer and then the restaurant serves typical Bavarian fare. It's about a 45 minute drive from the center past Lake Starnberg. Unfortuntately, public transport is an option using the S5. A rental car is a nice option for this drive. On Sundays they have local oom-pah-pah bands playing in the beer garden. It's a great experience.

I have many more recommendations. Just ask me what kind of food you'd like to eat.

I was there in Sept 2003, for our upcoming trip I hope to take Mrs Sweet Willie if there is time.

BTW, for any Flyertalkers that might be in München on Sat Nov 26, there will be a Flyertalk dinner: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...ler-stubn.html

Ate at Wirsthaus in der Au, down the hill from Hilton Munich City. Outstanding food and nice atmosphere. Packed with locals and otherwise completely reserved, but they found us two spots.

We will be in Munich on New Year's Eve. We will have our twelve year old son with us--staying in Hilton Munich City. Any suggestions--he would also be happy staying in and eating room service so adult suggestions are also welcome.

If its your first time i would highly recommend Augustiner brauhaus (beer hall), traditional and IMHO the best beer in Munich.
*During the day for food or a beer or two, never done anything special at night in Munich.

Are there any 'fine dining' suggestions? I am meeting a friend late tomorrow night and we will probably go to the Hofbrauhaus (past my bedtime :)), but I'd love to have a really great meal together on Tuesday night German/Bayerisch would be great, but I'm flexible. Here in the Allgau the food has been OK to mediocre the last few days, but even the best food (it was grilled veal with mushroom sauce and hause-made Spatzli) could have done with a couple of tablespoons less salt! :).

Thanks

If you want something that is more 'fine dining'-oriented but still with a local touch in Munich, try the 'Schuhbecks'. It is located at Platzl 6+8 in Munich.

IAD2MUC Feb 22, 2012 9:06 pm

I enjoy Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl at the SE corner of Frauenkirche, between Augustiner am Dom and Andechs am Dom. If you want a quick beer, there is a window around the corner (left side looking at the place) to get a draft out of a wooden barrel.

Has anyone tried the Palais Keller at the Bayerischer Hof?

Parameters: Arriving 625p from Innsbruck at the Hbf. Have a 9p departure back out of the Hbf and looking for a place with Bavarian food (will be eating too much Austrian food (pretty much the same as Bavarian?) the 2 weeks before and will be having a week of Italian food).

I've been there several times. nice place, good food. let the waiter know you need to leave to get your train - saves you time and pay your bill not too late. It can be crowded sometimes. enjoy :)

Given my relative short time in Munich, how is the Augustiner Keller? Just don't want to stress over the tram connection to the Palais Keller.

Augustiner Keller is good. You will not be disappointed.

Palais Keller is a very short walk from rail station - why take tram?

About 1 Km each way? Not that far but we only have a scheduled 2 1/2 hrs between trains (and want to get back in plenty of time to board the nachtzug), have to stash the bags as well.

oliver2002 Sep 12, 2012 7:25 am

Walk to the Augustiner Keller, Palais is too far away and too fancy schmanzy and frigging expensive! OK, its in the basement of the most expensive 5* Hotel in town... Augustiner will give you a much better bavarian experience.

I'm looking for a restaurant in Munich - going to be there right before Oktoberfest, so I'm assuming I'll need a reservation.

It's tough to decide online since a lot of places do no have any English menus.

Can someone recommend 2-3 solid places close to central Munich that allows easy walking distance/short taxi to the nightlife (bars, etc).

I'd love to try something German/Bavarian/etc.

Price isn't an issue as long as it isn't $150/person.

Did some research and saw Biergarten Chinesischer Turm (http://www.chinaturm.de/) and Spatenhaus an der Oper (Spatenhaus an der Oper). How are these.

Other recommendations welcome!!!

legallyblond Sep 12, 2012 10:27 pm

Any place that serves Augustiner is a winner. The Helles is the best beer ever, they will likely be serving their special Oktoberfest beer this time of year! Prost. Do try O'Batzda!!!!

I'm not sure about a reservation for this restaurant, but one of my favorites is Zum Dürnbräu, one of the older traditional Bavarian establishments in Munich. It´s on the Dürnbräugasse and very centrally located. I try to stop by once or twice each time I am in Munich.

You normally don't need reservations... the Spatenhaus is a good bet, pricing on the higher end. The chinesischer turm Biergarten is open during the day and definitely has no reservations ;) The restaurant opposite to it closes at 9pm and is far away from the town.

The Weisse Brauhaus is good, relatively cheap and in downtown: http://www.weisses-brauhaus.de/

Close to it is Paulaner im Tal, that is a nice place too, the decor is not that traditional though:
http://www.paulaner-im-tal.de/Paulan...tartseite.html

BTW, most restaturants in town have an english menu.

I have some photos of the Augustiner Keller in our BMW trip report. We really enjoyed it and will go back if we're in Munich again. The spicy sausages are excellent as are the giant pretzels. Ask the waiter for the English menu, a laminated white sheet of paper. The German menu is much prettier but the English, much easier to read. We enjoyed comparing the two menus to try and learn the names of the various dishes.

Any recent recommendations for restaurants in Munich - we're staying near Marienplatz, so prefer something there. Not beer halls - ideally something finer dining in a German/Bavarian style.

That’s one of the high end options, but wouldn’t call it Bavarian. The Bavarian restaurants I visited in Munich were all rustic. Excemption is Schuhbeck, but wasn’t happy with my meal.

No, it's not Bavarian but it is representative of Bavarian culture and tradition. I don't particularly like Schuhbeck either btw. - I believe you mean exception or was it exemption?

Unlike in Vienna, where we have true Viennese fine dining, it would be a challenge to find what people consider to be traditional Bavarian cuisine at a so-called "fine dining" establishment (I hate the phrase "fine dining" incidentally but that's probably the topic for another thread).

Ah, the old contradiction in terms! Maybe we should aim for something bavarian one night and a fancier place the other.

And I'm not wild about the term "fine dining" either but was trying to give some indication I wasn't looking for more basic stuff - something with a bit of good experience (and said "finer") (My main issue is that it's more typically used to define a place that's a step up from takeout - i.e., Oliver Garden instead of Panera)

LAX2Anywhere Dec 15, 2017 10:19 am

A couple of our favorites in the immediate Marienplatz area are Schneider Brauhaus. Zum Augustiner and Augustiner am Dom.
None of them would be "fine dining", definitely traditional Bavarian.

Uuuups - yes ecxeption;) Agree about Tantris. Was in Munich last weekend, but none of the high end options available. Thought about Atelier but booked for weeks - 3 stars are like a magnet.

I don't know that the somewhat stereotypical 'traditional' Bavarian food (beer hall atmosphere) lends itself to the tired notion of 'fine dining', but you could try Käfer or Brenner if you want the 'atmosphere'.

flugvergnugen Dec 19, 2017 12:42 pm

Maybe not fine dining, but "finer dining" in a nice rural setting can be had in Aying at August und Maria. Very much Bavarian, and not too far from downtown Munich with the S-Bahn. Haven't been there since their renovations/re-branding, though.
