Suggestions for Getting from MUC to Nuremberg?
Well, Hilton Munich City is not budging in my little dispute with them, so Mr.J and I are starting our Bavarian holiday in Nuremberg.
I know that the ICE train goes between Munich and Nuremberg, but are there any good alternative transportation services between the two cities, especially ones that go directly from MUC airport to Nuremberg such as the LH buses (I already checked LH and their bus service doesn't go to Nuremberg, unfortunately)? We are not getting a car.

There aren't any trains from Munich airport direct to Nuernberg, but a short trip by S-Bahn to Munich main station and then the ICE or the 125 mph RE train (much cheaper but half an hour slower than the ICE) should do it. There is also the possibility of taking the bus from the airport to Freising (the town right next to the airport) and a through RE train from there to Nuernberg.

Or you might take the bus 635 (departing at both terminals) to Freising station (15-20 mins). There's a two-hourly direct regional train to Nrnberg (30 EUR p.P.), and if you don't mind changing trains in Regensburg the service is more or less hourly. Travel time from Freising is a bit more than 2 hrs.

Thank you, Track and electrique, for your suggestions. What is the advantage of going to Freising rather than to Munich Hbf? Is it just cost, or does one save some time, or .... ?
Edited to add: After looking at the DB site, I think I've answered my own question -- yes and yes and ....?

Munich is south of the airport, Nrnberg is north. Going via Freising shaves some 60km off your journey, but has the disadvantage of a slower and less frequent (but a tad cheaper) train service. The bus to Freising is 3ph, so you'll get there quite easily. When you know your arrival time at MUC, check the website if there's a train via Regensburg (direct or ALX,RE) going at the right time. If there isn't, take a faster train from Munich.

What about a simple thing like a flight? If you are in MUC this can be the easiest alternative.

And an overly expensive alternative as well. The only carrier between MUC and NUE is LH regional which charges around 250EUR, more than 4 times the fare of the most expensive rail ticket...

If you book todayon LH.com, April flights are in the range of 150 Euro, May flights in the range of 92 to 120 Euro and close to ALL June and July flights are available in E in the range of 49 Euro.

You can often book a flight to a minor airport in Germany for the same fare as to an international hub if you are traveling from north America - LH throws in the connecting flight at no cost. I've done this lots of times and it's obviously the cheapest. The best alternative is to use the train or bus/train described above. If you use the S-Bahn to the Hbf then remember to stamp the ticket before boarding or the patrol will hit you for a large fine, even if you have the ticket - stamp it on the platform after you buy it. The DB web site (http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml) has every detail of the trip. Just make sure to uncheck "prefer fast connections" or you will only get the more expensive routes (via ICE or IC).

Despite everything I heard and assumed about expensive travel within Europe, I've been surprised at finding numerous Euro50-75 fares over the last 2-3 years, even when traveling major airlines (LH) and to/from major airports.
