How about in the other direction?

I have a connecting flight to MUC and onwards to the US at 9am on a Sunday morning. If I want to be at TXL at 7am should probably take any sort of transport latest at 6.15am.

Do I just do the obvious thing and pre-book a cab or does the TXL bus or other public transport run at that time?

On Sunday the TXL bus starts running at 05:11 (from Alexanderplatz to the airport) - it then runs every 20-30 minutes.

For your Sunday schedule, the bus that leaves Alexanderplatz at 06:31 arrives at Tegel at 06:58.

Never been to Berlin before but looks like I'll try the TXL bus. If I use priceline to find a hotel, it seems like they divide selection zones between west & east of the downtown center. So if one travels to Alexanderplatz can he use the metro or bus service from there to travel to all the major "downtown" areas?

Depending on where the hotel is, he might be able to get off before the bus reaches Alexanderplatz. It does go round the houses a bit! But to be honest public transport in Berlin is pretty easy to navigate and I am sure you can check on the BVG website in advance: http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/Bvg/Start

Yes, you can continue on busses, U-bahn, S-bahn etc . And on the same ticket at no extra cost. The bus lines that run to and from Tegel are part of public traffic system.

You can even use your ticket on regional trains run by the DB within the ticket's geographical validity.
