How exactly do they handle mailing a ticket if someone's driving a car with plates from outside the EU? For a rental car I figure they go through the rental agency, but if it's actually your own car and you've already left Germany, what do they do? Do they have some sort of reciprocity with the American (or Canadian, etc.) government?

I just got an speeding ticket from my last rent. I have to pay 20 EUR, because I was 13 km/h too fast on the highway, where the speed limit was 80.

It is easy for Germany to send a speeding ticket to Austria. But I donīt know about the US ?

I don't know what the rental agreement says but the German authorities can't go after Americans for speeding tickets if they don't catch them right away.
A letter to New York or wherever is meaningless, I would never pay as an American.

Ok, I must be crazy, but I just booked yet another mileage run to Munich, this time just 1-night. I'll be there Sat Feb 21 (flight back Sun Feb 22). Staying at the Hilton-City this time.

Anyone know of anything going on that I shouldn't miss? Any big shows in town? Or anyone up for dinner/drinks?

I'm thinking of booking (if available) a tour of BMW World; I visited before but didn't get to do a tour.

Sign up in the MUC regular table thread, so maybe we will have it at the same time, when you are at MUC.

It's the carnival weekend. Good decision not to go to Cologne or Mainz. In Munich you'll be safe :)

Wow, what are the odds... I'd feel better in MUC anyway, well maybe not around Oktoberfest...

So this is probably a stupid question, but where would you suggest running in Munich, if it won't be too cold? Somewhere easy to get to from the Hilton (in the city) would be ideal. I just did my first marathon this past Sunday, looking at doing a half the weekend prior to this, so just something short-ish (3-8 miles) to keep me fresh. Otherwise I'm hoping the hotel has a treadmill.

Thanks for the idea, I had no clue that thead even existed. I'll miss the gathering by 1 day, but I posted there as well, maybe some folks will stick around and show a fellow FT'er the unusual side of MUC....

Thats a good idea. They are open daily from 9 am to 8 pm. Tours are available mo-fri. from 9 am to 4 pm , sat and sun from 10 am to 4 pm. So maybe this time you are gonna make it.

Thanks for posting here, as you reminded me to look into this. According to their website:
"The BMW Munich Plant will be closed from:
- 19th through 27th February 2009"

The museum was closed when I visited last (it was moving from one site to another). Has anyone been since they relocated? That will be open:
"Tuesday to Friday 9 am – 6 pm
Sat, Sun, public holidays 10 am – 8 pm"

Otherwise, I'm thinking of a trip out to Dachau, but not sure if I'll be up for that after a TA flight alone. I have been to Auswitz; is there anything particular about Dachau that would distinguish it from other places? Has it been better preserved?

It's been turned into a museum and memorial. It had been left alone and unnoticed but I wrote it up for a guidebook when I was a kid and then it became a tourist destination. So they removed the barracks and made it into an educational experience, as in Oranienburg. The museum is interesting. The Buechenwald camp in Weimar is much less of a museum and pretty ghastly if you want to see the real thing. A more uplifting trip requires the use of a car to drive to the Neuschwanstein Castle near Fussen.
