Does anyone know if there is a Starbucks in the airport terminal somewhere accessible landside or from the DL gates? Also how far is the Sheraton MUC Airport...will use it as the layover hotel for my upcoming MR.

There is a Starbucks in Terminal 2 (the *A terminal) but it may be accessed WITHOUT dealing with security.

Sheraton MUC is close to the far end of the runways, but on the other side of any entrance. If they have a free shuttle, it may be promising.

ATMs airside?

I tried a search, but the "minimum 4 letters" error message came up

What kind of ATMs are there airside at Munich Airport? Does Citibank or HSBC have ATMs there? I'm doing a mileage run (my very first one) on UA there and LH back and will probably need some cash...

There's a Deutsche Bank ATM in the baggage claim area, to the right if you are facing the exit/customs. Good if you're a Bank of America customer.

Munich has four public transport systems:

1. S-Bahn = fastest of the four, going underground and elevated outside the city - only one that goes all the way out to the airport
2. Tram (also knows as Straßenbahn) = street cars in the center of the city
3. bus (no explanation needed)
4. U-Bahn = subway (95% underground)

It is actually just one integrated public transit system, with four different modes of transport. Your ticket is valid on any and all of them.

Sorry, the civil engineer in me can't let this slide ;): the S-Bahn is 'at grade' outside the city center, not 'elevated'. The maglev train, if they ever build it, will be elevated. :p

Just for the non-initiated...

The Munich transport uses "zones". If you travel within the same zone, it's considered a 1-zone ticket. Between 2 zone, 2-zone (you see where that's going). However, if you go from Zone-2 to Zone-1 and back to Zone-2, That makes it a 3-zone ticket. Good example: North of the City to City Center, and then out towards the airport. The most a ticket can be is 4-zones. You could go from the airport (zone 4) to the east into Zone-4 again, and it's still just a 4-zone ticket.

[feel free to correct me... This is how I understand the Munich ground transport system]

And if anyone can help me make the ticket machines "speak" english... I'm all ears. I've never been able to make 'em do it! :D:D:D

Trip report

We got home last night after 25 hours in transit. What a wonderful trip. I was so worried because my husband is not the same type of traveller as me and if this didn't work out with all the flying then he would not want to go for a long weekend again.

I want to thank everyone here who helped me with my questions. We took several of the suggestions for the approx 36 hours that we had in Munich. Went to Auguststieners Friday night after check in and on Saturday we went to Andeches. Everything was great. The only thing that I would counter from the comments here is that we think the Hofbrauhaus food is excellant. We went Saturday night for supper and it was as good as it was in Nov 06. Actually my cousins who we meet in Munich said they liked the food better at the Hofbrauhaus then Andechs cafeteria style beer hall. It was good but not as good as the Hoff.

So again thank you for all your time and helpful suggestions. We had a blast.

Munich city to the airport

I have an upcomming stay in Munich.

- The airport hotels want to charge 8 EUR per way for the shuttle
- The public train wants to charge 9.60 EUR per way

Is there no cheaper way to travel between the city and the airport? There is, if a recall correctly, some possibility if one buys a national train ticket instead of the local Verkehrsverbunds ticket.

Do you dudes have some advice on that?

The airport is kind of out of the city. 8EUR for a hotel shuttle isn't that bad.

Where is your hotel located?

I don't think that there is a cheaper national train ticket unless you buy the weekend ticket for Bavaria and use that also for the airport commute?
I believe it's 40Euros, it's good on all regional trains incl. city transportation for 5 people during an entire weekend.

The only way of cheaper transportation by rail is a national railway ticket to Ostermünchen via Munich central bought with 50% rail card discount. This about 6 Euro something. The return on the http://www.airportbus-muenchen.de/cms/ is 17 Euro.

The city center is about a 40 minute train ride from the airport. If your hotel is charging you 8 EUR for the ride then I would take it.

Enjoy the speed but be careful!!

I realize I'm quoting a very old message, but since the thread is current (and with my newfound interest in German policing!), this caught my eye. How exactly do they handle mailing a ticket if someone's driving a car with plates from outside the EU? For a rental car I figure they go through the rental agency, but if it's actually your own car and you've already left Germany, what do they do? Do they have some sort of reciprocity with the American (or Canadian, etc.) government?
