The brewery in Freising is Weihenstephan -- it no longer is a monastery, but is owned by the state of Bavaria and is closely connected to the brewing school at the Technical University of Munich.

But Andechs is wonderful and well worth a visit.

Andechs is definitely worth the excursion but it will take a big chunk of a day. I've taken the s-bahn and walked a couple of times in the summer months but it will be a slippery walk up the trail from the station through the woods in the winter. I think that there might be a shuttle from the s-bahn stop to the kloster.

Absolutely correct. It's Weihenstephan that is in Freising which is close to the airport. Kloster Andechs is a little bit out of the city but worth a visit if you actually spend some time in the area.

We are staying at the Munich City Hilton which is above Rosenheimer Platz station. I am interested in going to the kloster to sample their brews. How long does it take to get there by S-Bahn? Can anyone tell me if there is a 48 hour bahn pass as we arrive in Munich at 5:00pm on a Friday and depart Sunday at 4:00am?`

Thanks,

Gwen

Those are kind of tricky times (well at least the 4:00 A.M. departure:eek:). I think the day tickets expire at 3:00 A.M. IIRC so you might have to buy 3 separate partner day tickets. They are a great deal anyway. Have a look at this link to the MVV site it might shed some more light on what you need.

Why not get a 3-day ticket?

What kind of departure do they have at 4 a.m.? No plane is leaving that early!!!

Thanks for all the replies to my thread, some great tips. I'm back from my 2nd trip, survived the whole TA thing in coach (not recommended). I was in F for PHX-PIT-PHL, had a nice meal PHX-PIT, a few min to relax in PIT, and plenty of time to enjoy the US Envoy lounge in PHL.

Went in the LH lounge on arrival in MUC. Worked out well, I was towards the back of the plane, so the immigration lines were a little long by the time I got there. I took my time (those showers are amazing!), and walked right up to a young immigration guy, no problems getting back into Germany. It was a 40 min train ride to the Hbf, dropped off my bag in the hotel, then out exploring.

I did make it to BMW World in Munich, but all of the tours were full (both English and German). I wandered around a bit (I now want an X3), and went over to the Olympic Park. Went up the tower, and just enjoyed the area. Went back into town (near the Glockenspiel), was looking for a Starbucks to relax at, ended up at another cafe, even better. Went to 6pm mass at Frauenkirche, dinner at a small Italian place, then back to the hotel for bed.

The daytrip to Salzburg was amazing, I'd highly recommend it. I picked up a Bayern Pass at the Hbf, because I spoke to somoene it was 19E, but 17E if you can figure out the machine on your own. The train ride was about 2 hours each way, very scenic during the day there with some great views of the Alps. Salzburg is a small town, very walkable, with the Christmas markets in full swing. I went to the Mozart Wohnhaus, ate at Cafe Tomaselli, went up the incline train to the fortress (again some great views), and all over town. I only wish I had time for an overnight there, they do all kinds of concerts, and the Christmas lights are fantastic. The train back to Munich Hbf was good, met an Irish guy at the Salzburg Hbf so we sat near each other and chatted on the train.

I had planned to see The Magic Flute at 8pm on Mon, but somehow looked at the schedule wrong, I arrived around 7:30, it started at 7 and was full. I saw another play, don't remember the name but it was quite strange, but interesting. Stopped briefly to watch an English guitar player sing Simon & Garfunkel on the way back to the hotel, then back in bed by 11pm.

The trip back was a mess. Let's just say US and LH need to work on their codeshare stuff.... It took 3 LH agents before I could check-in, and then only to FRA. By the time I got to the gate in MUC, I had no time for the lounge. In FRA it was a mess, arrived in the A area, left from C, had to go through a tunnel, exit immigration, then clear extra security. Thankfully I hadn't checked bags, I would have never made it. Arrived at the gate about 15 min before the flight was to leave. As it was, my FRA-PHL seat was reassigned to the back, but I moved to a bulkhead and was fine most of the trip. Had plenty of time in PHL to enjoy the B-C lounge, and was in F PHL-LAS, had an awesome FA and gave her an A+B card. LAS-PHX was on a CRJ, and I managed to sleep.

Overall, a great experience (minus the LH thing leaving). It was far easier last week taking the US MUC-PHL nonstop, and I'd plan an extra day to do that for next time. Would definitely love to go back to the Munich area sometime, and December is the perfect time.

Sorry for the confusion. My flight leaves at 6:30am so I thought I would need to leave the hotel around 4:00am. If it is not necessary to leave at that time to make a 6:30am international departure please let me know. I will need the sleep :).

No we need more details... Which airline? Which destination? E-ticket? Status? Do you plan to check luggage?

Is your final destination AMS?

If yes, you should be fine being at the airport an hour beforehand. You will be leaving from Terminal 1. Do OLCI if possible!

Sorry, we are continuing on to MSP after a 6 hour layover in AMS. Will that impact your comments?

Certainly not. You flight to AMS is domestic (Schengen) and an hour early at this time of the day is plenty of time. I leave Central Munich for domestic flights in general 90 minutes (+ 15 / - 5, depending on the schedule of the S8) before take-off.

Flying Lawyer is correct. The secondary screening, etc. will be done in AMS. One hour is plenty, especially at that time of day. By the way, depending on where your hotel is, the S1 could be faster than the s8. Check them both.

Is there no chance for you to change to a later flight to avoid the long layover?

Flying Lawyer is not only correct but read the post, too: ges123 is staying at the City Hilton - no doubt about the S8 :D
