You know, I considered that, but I was ultimately dissuaded from that option by the repeated insistence on the DB website that tickets purchased that way are not valid for "third parties." It was not entirely clear, but it seemed that the web site would accept my credit card for two tickets on identical itineraries, but the one I purchased for someone else traveling with me might not be valid. So I just waited to get the tickets at the station rather than deal with an uncertain (though illiogical) situation.

You're right about that, Helena - the ticket for the second person would not be valid. DB online printout tickets cannot be bought for anyone else, not even for a second person who is travelling with you. Tickets for two people can be booked online but have to be sent by mail. I do not understand why and consider this rule complete nonsense, but that's what it is.

What you certainly can do is to buy ONE online ticket for two or more persons with the same itinary if these are travelling together and the CC holder is one of them.

You can but these tickets HAVE TO BE SENT BY MAIL, which requires an address and enough time for postal delivery. You cannot do printout tickets for two people even if the card holder is one of them.

Conductors on German long distance trains always check tickets. On regional (Nahverkehr) DB trains, checks happen fairly often. On the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, etc. checks are carried out less regularly, depending on city.

On the local trains expect a pair to enter the train dressed normally, and then when the train departs the station they will pull out their Ausweise and canvas the car. Woe be unto you if you are caught schwarzfahren; it will cost you 40 euro on the cheap trains. Given the relatively cheap day tickets that are good on the entire city network, it only makes sense to buy a ticket (and make sure that you validate it).
