Things to do in and around Bad Aibling

My husband is attending a conference for three days at a hotel just outside of this town. I am tagging along. Options for things to do seem somewhat limited and it is about a 25 euro taxi ride to the Rosenheim train station. Should I just rent a car?

Yes, I would do it - otherwise you are too limited

OK, we have booked a car. So now what? I have a car and and he's in meetings 8-5 for three days. Where should I go? I love to hike and trail run, also enjoy historic buildings, homes, castles, etc. Any ideas appreciated!

I would drive to Fssen to visit Castle Neuschwanstein.

A nice place for hiking is Wimbachklamm, Berchtesgardener Land.

Bad Aibling to Neuschwanstein will be a minimum of 2 hours each way, plus there is always a queue to get into the place. I guess it's impressive to see once, but let me give you another suggestion...Ludwig's other grand project was Herrenchiemsee, a Versailles reproduction on an island in the Chiemsee, which is much closer to you (say 30 minutes). You take a ferry over and walk to the castle. It's quite impressive and you can see where building stopped.

Hiking in the Berchtesgadener Land is ubiquitous.

I was just looking at Herrenchiemsee. I don't want to do 2 hour drive each way by myself, but that one looks very doable.

Also thinking about running all the way around Simmisee. 10 miles or so.

That is a great area where you can do many things without driving too far. Depending on weather...
- Chiemsee / Schloss Herrenchiemsee

- Walking: Simssee (nice Restaurant Simssee Stuben) and up Ratzinger Hhe or other direction Schliersee and on to:
- Mountains Bayrischzell / Wendelstein Peak (Cable Car)

- Town: Rosenheim or of course Salzburg for a day trip
- small old town: Wasserburg am Inn

- dinner locations: in Rosenheim many; countryside and worth a visit: www.hirzinger.eu

Let me know if you have further questions, I am a regular in this area...

Thank you! I'm getting excited, it looks lovely and since the husband is not nearly the hiker I am I'm going to appreciate him being at work. :-) Hope to have nice weather.

Do you like scenic drives? If so, see my post #26 in this thread on the Rossfeld Panoramastrasse:

I know that you booked a rental car already, but to keep things straight, there is no need to take a taxi to Rosenheim when wanting to go somewhere from Aibling, as Bad Aibling is served by trains to Rosenheim and other cities at least once every hour (especially, if you want to visit big cities like Munich or Salzburg, where driving/parking is not that much fun). Every German knows about this train line because there was a head-on-collision with some casualties about a month ago.

Hope it worked out well
Weather here will be fine.
Touring:
Not far from you is another nice drive, called Sudelfeldstrasse (starts at Brannenburg near the Wendelstein train 4743'22.9"N 1205'33.0"E Google Maps) which can be extended to a nice round tour bringing you back to Bad Aibling. (Just a hint:Like the other recommended drive for Panoramastrasse, http://www.rossfeldpanoramastrasse.de/en/ be aware of the motorbikes...they drive like lunatics, allthough speed limits are enforced..and both roads are private so toll fee has to be paid)
So once you start on the Sudelfeldstrasse, continue on this "B307" and pass Bayrischzell, follow the road for about 7km and when you see a sign turning left to Spitzingsee, go for it. Nice walk arround it. Nice cakes.
Then go back on B307, turn left onto it an follow the road towards Schliersee. Just before you come to the village, you pass one of the best German Whisky destilleries SLYRS http://www.slyrs.de/en/html/slyrs_home.html on the right, in case you wanna get a present for your hubby from the tour...
Then continue and pass the Schliersee or stop there again and follow the B472 which will bring you back towards Bad Aibling

As for hiking..
top of the mountains is difficult due to snow, but worth it.
I would take the cog railroad up to Wendelstein http://www.wendelsteinbahn.de/anreise or the cable car on the Kampenwand http://www.kampenwand.de (both websites german only, but use google translater) , enjoy the fantastic view, walk arround or sit in the sun, have a coffee or something nice to eat. Walking down to the valley is currently not possible, so you gotta go back the same way..cable car / cog train.

In Bad Aibling there is a nice and inexpensive thermal bath/spa http://www.therme-bad-aibling.de/en/ , with many saunas and pools and beauty treatment, in case you wanna relax.

Also about 10min drive from the center there is a fantastic beer garden from the Maxlrain brewery http://www.maxlrain.de/en/maxlrain/s...-bite-and-more.
I think you might be lucky with the weather and be able to sit there an have a nice beer with your hubby and enjoy Bavarian "Gemtlichkeit" while looking towards the Alps.
Rosenheim was already mentioned, nice and old town, typical Bavarian..
In case you are into good shoes, there is a factory outlet from a famous German brand Gabor http://www.gabor.de/en/company/gabor...y-outlets.html

Driving to and arround the Chiemsee and going over for the already mentioned Herrenchiemsee castle is defintely worth it.
Munich...
well lots to see..
again, go for the beer gardens, since the weather will be fine...take a walk through the Englischer Garten, the big park in Munich and watch the surfers on the little river called Eisbach
as for food..
I would recommend some typical Bratwurst place called www.bratwurst-gloeckl.de on Frauenstrasse 9, near the "Dome"
If you need more info PM me
