looking for info on this, how close is the train station to DUS? How often do the trains run, which trains should we avoid, which ones should we take.

DUS has two stations at the airport, one on the main line and an S-Bahn stop, either will take you to the main station in Dsseldorf in 5-10 minutes. Either works, there's a direct ICE to Munich from there roughly hourly

Dsseldorf airport has its own long distance train station, served by regional trains and a few long distance trains. This train station is connected by the so called skytrain with the long distance train station. There is in addition the Station "Dsseldforf Airport Terminal" underneath the terminal. From there you can take the S 11 to Dsseldorf main station.
Depending on where and how you would go to Munich, take the S 11 to main station as more long distance trains stop at main station than at the long distance station at the airport.
