I have a work trip to Braunschweig coming up in two weeks. I'm pretty excited, although I know next to nothing about the town. So I'm hoping to gather some FT-garnered knowledge.

I'll be flying into HAJ and taking the Deutsche Bahn to Braunschweig's Hauptbahnhof. And I'll be staying at the M�venpick Hotel. (This probably would not have been my first choice, but there is another large conference in town; and it was all that my travel department could book.) From there I will be traveling to the Technische Universit�t each day while I'm there.

Am I correct in thinking that I should take the M1 or M2 from the Hauptbahnhof to Hagenmarkt in order to get to the M�venpick? And can I take the M3 from Hagenmarkt to get to the Universit�t? I cannot tell if Hagenmarkt is the best stop to be using for my daily trips.

I'd also like to know if there are any cool bars and/or restaurants I should be visiting! I've already read mention of the Oker Cabana here on FT. My mother-in-law found an old pictorial book of Braunschweig, which was published in 1970; I'm excited to compare what Braunschweig looks like in those pictures with how it looks today!

Of course, any and all help/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Arriving by train:
At the central station you can use the bus or tram.
Bus: take bus M 11 and exit at Packhof.
Tram: take tram S 1 and get off at Hagenmarkt.

From the hotel to the TU it's less than half a mile. Depending on your destination at TU, M3 could be a good choice, walking is another.

Can't comment on restaurant and pubs, sorry.

And I see now that the line the hotel calls 'S1' is referred to as the 'M1' by the local transit authority. @:-) That was a bit confusing.

Can't help you too much on the bar scene. Like most German cities, Braunschweig has an Altstadt zone which has plenty of pubs & cafes, but unfortunately I can't think of any specific ones to recommend.

If you have a free day or two I would recommend visiting Goslar, which is about 1 hr south of Braunschweig by train. This is a smallish town in the Harz foothills with all the original 14th-15th century buildings still intact. I love going there.

There is another pretty and small old town much closer to Braunschweig that I'd like to mention, and that's Wolfenb�ttel: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/f86bd/17dd/ This can be done as an afternoon or even quick evening visit. Take the bus No. 420 from Rathaus and you are there in some 20-25 minutes.

You will find quite a number of student pubs and cafes in all varieties around the central university campus. And the city's best-known pub mile is Magni quarter, a preserved old quarter in the Southeast of the city centre behind Kaufhof department store (which is impossible to overlook).

And the tram is indeed the M1, there are no S lines in Braunschweig. The M1 also continues to the university area.

Ah, yes! When I started this thread, I was aware that we have a native here on FT. That was clear from a couple of searches.

Thanks for the information! Unfortunately, I will not have much time to go beyond Braunschweig. All of my exploring will be limited to Braunscheig itself.

OK. I will have to look for those. Of course, I am hoping that I can find some nice non-student pubs, too.

I will have to let the hotel know the information on their website is confusing.

That shouldn't be more than about a ten-minute walk from my hotel. I'm definitely going to check that out! ^

I've done embarrassingly poorly with the local public transportation. But I think I've got it now!
