Nuremberg beer

Travelling to Nuremberg for the first time on a day trip out of Munich. Looking to sample some Franconian beers. Does anyone have any tips on good places to drink in the Altstadt?

Lots of beer halls just off the main square, and there's one such in one of the big old buildings (left side of the main pedestrian street walking in from the Hbf). Tucher is the home brand (or one of them anyway). They seem to have a new beer called Cola Weizen (cola wheat). Sounds revolting so try one for us!

Knigstor is the large, reddish tower that you see off to the left as you exit the Hbf. There are one or two decent, albeit touristy restaurants that serve up a decent plate of Nrnbergers and good beer to go with it. The place closest to the actual tower in the artisans area serves up a good kellerbier in a stone mug. Also, the castle itself in the Altstadt has a biergarten by the entrance, but I believe it serves only Tucher. There are a few restaurants in town that sport the St. Georgean Brau signs, which is another decent local kellerbier. Other than that, Tucher is the home brand, but it is quite good for a mass produced beer.

A few nearby alternatives (by train) are Hersbruck, which has a good local beer, Bayreuth, which is famous for Maisels Weisse and several excellent smaller beers, and Amberg (technically in the Oberpfalz region, but has several excellent beers including the locally brewed Schlderer beers at their brauhaus-restaurant, as well as the Bruckmller beers).

An update: If you are going to be in town between now and the 27th of September, there will be the Altstadtfest going on. You are certain to be able to get a good Frankische bier (and some good food as well!)

(Nrnberg seems to be having a fest going on every weekend. The Herbstvolksfest just ended and now there is the Altstadtfest going on.)

Just to update. We found great little places to drink all over the Altstadt. Totally impressed with Nurnberg although we never even got all the way up to the castle or any of the other must see places(weather was absolutely dire even for a Canadian). Definitely going to go back and spend a couple of days there with a side trip to Bamberg in the near future.

Good choice. Bamberg is great for beer as well with 10 different breweries still active in the city. ^

Sadly, Bamberg is down to 9 (Maisel closed last year).

I have only been in this one:

Brauerei Schlenkerla
