And it is an easy choice to get there by public transport: Take the TXL bus from the airport all the way to the last stop and you are there. 2,10 Euro for an AB ticket of 6,00 Euro for a day ticket).

I echo the priceline recomendation. I'm going in September and got the Maritim (the one in Tiergarten) for $71, including taxes. It looks rather soulless, but it still an okay deal despite a walk to the trains. For the same trip, I wasn't able to get a 4-star place in the East for as cheap as I wanted and think I paid $86ish (of which $10 per night was in priceline bonus money).
