Inexpensive lodging in Berlin
 

Hi,

I will be visiting Berlin for 3 days in September. I am looking for inexpensive (50e/night) accommodation (hotel, apartment, etc) near the city center of the East part of Berlin. If anyone can point me into the right direction, I'd appreciate it greatly.

It depends a bit of "when" in September. During some periods you might even get the Berlin Hilton for as low as 76 Euro, other periods will have rates as high as 350 Euro. HRS.de is THE source of intelligence for hotel bookings and this will give you a pretty good overview.

In general: Berlin is easy to navigate and - e.g. - from Bahnhof Zoo (in the centre of the old West) to Bahnhof Friedrichstraße (in the centre of the old East) you will travel less than 10 minutes by public transit. So what you are really looking for is a place close to a subway or S-Bahn station taking you directly to your ultimate destination.

Maybe you have a look at HRS.DE, check what meets your budget and location, come back and we give you some comments? Or give me a hint, were you ultmatively need to be and when and I have a look for you.

My appologies for not doing any research and leg work; I have not yet had a chance to pick up a guide on Berlin and actually figure out areas, what we are going to do, etc... just been preoccupied work work and wanted to take care of flights, then hotels...

I digress but I will be arriving in the evening of Sept 10th and checking out on Monday, Sept 13th. I will look around HRS.de and see if I spot anything interesting, but a simple inexpensive apartment where we can leave our stuff and start exploring (or inexpensive hotel) would be fine. The other traveler I am traveling with is on a tight budget hence the price range.

Not the cheapest time for Berlin. :)

You could go for Econtel (***), which is available for 47,90 (between the airport and city west and a X9 bus stop for Bahnhof Zoo and the airport in front of the hotel). You could go for A&O Hauptbahnhof (**), close to the central station and well linked to both, City East and West for 59,00. Grand City Hotel Berlin Zentrum (***) in the very heart of City West (good location, perfetly linked to all kinds of public transport) offers a 3-4-2 and a total of 178,00 for the three nights (close to Ku-Damm).

Several of the cheap locations are in the suburbs. These three are the most central and bearable ones I found.

MotelOne comes to mind. Don't think of the American MotelOnes which are rather bad (at least in my limited experience) but this is a pretty good no frills chain over here. Single rooms are like 59 Euro a night.

I have stayed in two differnt MotelOne properties, actually both were in Berlin and both were not my choice but rather bookings from hosts but I was always very satisfied. They offered exactly what I needed. Clean, comfortable, modern, nice bathroom, good breakfast, no complaint what so ever. I would probably book them myself if I had to pay the night out of my own pocket.

My dear trusted friend. I had my consumer friendly day today and had checked the rates before posting :D. The cheapest Motel 1 for this period was 94 Euro double and 79 Euro single per night. You could however, stay in Dreilinden 25km out of town for 49 Euro. :D

Guilty as charged :p :D :td: I confess, I didn't check the rates for the specific dates, I was only stating basic information about cheap lodging in Berlin. Sorry. I should have checked the fares for the specific dates.

The central station hotel/hostel. My mother in law used it, and she didn't complain about it. You just have basic service, but it is clean and central. It seems, that the other hotels from this chain are also centrally located (except the airport (BBI) hotel). But I've never been in them.

PS: For Berlin, just try to stay within the S-Bahn-Ring. From there you can reach most areas pretty convenient.

Why not do one of the pensions. There are a lot in the city and they wont be hammered by school trips during that time frame, I think. I seem to remember that Lonely Planet has a great list of the pensions in town, and the NYtImes under its Berlin articles lists lots of uber cheapie ways to crash and stay. Craiglist is slowly creaking into use there too, but very slowly. Nonentheless, is something that could garner an apartment crash.

However its in the "west", but its very centrally located close to Wittenberg Platz. Clean, friendly - breakfast buffet included.

Good location with the U2 going or bus going to Mitte. However, unless you want to share a bathroom this is 75 Euro per night. Boys, I took the burden to check all of this and the specific weekend in Berlin is not easy at all (I am there too and booked the IC for 105 per night - however, booked in late May).

Etap Hotel Alexanderplatz, Mollstrasse 30, gives me a rate of 53€ per night for that weekend. It's a Accor chain so I wouldn't worry about quality. So, I'd go for it if I were you.

berlin is a good city to use priceline. you can get some good deals depending on what's going on in the city.

I've booked a room in this hotel. It seems like a good location and a safe choice. I will report back my experience.
I've used it once for Montreal and royally screwed it up (my fault) ended up spending nights at the boonies somewhere because I clicked wrong and there was no recourse thereafter.
