Hi,
if you want to see all the sights, take the bus no. 100 to Zoo and return with the bus no. 200. It is a cheap way to see most tourist attractions in Berlin. And with a day ticket for public transport, it does not involve additional cost.
cheers

for really good value: I recently had an amazing dinner: cocktail, starter AND main dish for something like 10 at Duy Quang Sredzkistrae 67, 10405 Berlin, that's on Prenzlauer Allee.
I was really impressed by the quality food you can get at that place.
another place not to miss: http://www.cafehaus-petriplatz.de it was a small caf near Spittelmarkt/Scharrenstrasse. parts of the movie "bourne supremacy were shot in that area ...

I'll try it...
This area -Prenzlauer Berg - is great. When in Berlin, I always go there, many nice restaurants.
However, the only one I can remember is "Trattoria Paparazzi". Husemannstrae 35
10435 Berlin, Germany

I found this one the other week:

Probiermahl, they offer small dishes, but not like snacks or tapas, but a full meal in a miniature size (at smaller prizes). We really enjoyed trying two or three different dishes. They do pretty nice cocktails too.

Yes! We are going to see Rienzi! FIL is a devotee of Wagner operas and he lamented about 5 years ago that it was the only one he hadn't seen. I made a promise that if it was being produced in his lifetime I would treat him, and we booked our tickets back in October!!!
Can you let me know a little bit about the buzz you mentioned or where I can access it? I miss a lot of opera news (living in the Alsacian sticks!!) and FIL doesn't have access to internet. VERY MANY THANKS!!

Can anyone recommend anywhere where we can get dinner at aroun 5pm. A buffet would be ideal - OH is running Berlin Marathon and needs a lot of carb! Ideally as central as possible (We are staying in the Westin).

Are there any updated recommendations? I'm going with a friend to Berlin and we would enjoy a restaurant that is casual yet with great food. It doesn't necessarily have to be German food as my friend had already a recommendation for such a place. But if it's good, then it can be German as well. Anything goes

try Florian in the Savingyplatz on Grolmanstrasse....Borschardt's is some of the worst food in Berlin. Overpriced and solely interesting for the scene (thats my opinion...they obviously keep rather busy so I'm in the minority)

Restaurants in Berlin
I am a frequent visitor to Berlin and the proud founder of the city's NPR FM station at 104,1 on the dial. Restaurants are a big part of the city's attractions for me (as are the concert halls) so this thread is really right up my allee. The past few years I have been staying in the Savignyplatz neighborhood and agree completely with the recommendations there. Borchardt is indeed overpriced BTW. Substitute the Italian gem Sale e Tabacchi on Kochstrasse near Checkpoint Charlie for your splurge meal. Anything on their menu with wild mushrooms is sure to be a hit.
Near Ottenthal on Kantstrasse (in fact almost next door) is Paris Bar...an old reliable hang out where you can get a nearly-Parisian steak frites with some chewy French red wines. It has a bit of history from the old West Berlin days when it was THE gathering spot for all the journalists covering the fall of the Wall. Doesn't appear to have been redecorated since then, but that's part of the charm.
Don't forget to bring your pocket FM radio!

Hi,
I live part-time in Berlin and I don't know your age.. that is most important for the restaurant choice..
So, let's see around Unter den Linden.. are mostly tourist restaurants, no local would go out here..
But as you are just visiting, just have cocktails on the roof top terrace of the hotel the rome if the weather allows it... That is the new Berlin and the service is OK.
At 20€ per person, you will miss of course the best restaurants such as the Margaux, and of course the Fishers Fritz at Gendarmenmarkt...(some still consider it the best restaurant in Berlin, I don't. It still lacks atmosphere..)
I agree on the Paris Bar, commented on by rougemont. But it's just the other part of the city, far away and visited right now by too many tourists. no locals either.
If you want to try some more 'berliner' Place?
Try "Doudou" it's very la mode right now - really everybody goes here. It's a modern version of the so so Borchardt.
And the best, it's cheap - we are in Berlin - around 13€ a plate, it's asian cuisine, of course..best sushi in town (and I compare only to new york restaurants) .. great, if you are between 30 and 45
It's kind of crowdy, loud, ok, very loud but just so Berlin. This kind of restaurant will make you love Berlin, too.
[OK, now I hope, that not all tourists will come here because then, I wouldn't go anymore :-) ]
Ok, I'm not objective, here.. ;-)
